  1. I'm thinking about getting either the NEC ND-2510A, the LG GSA-4120B or the LiteOn SOHW-832S, can anyone give me the pros/cons of each drive and what your final recommendation would be ?

I would go with the Nec 2510A same specs as the 2500A but dual layer capable. Nec is a better burner by far

  4. One thing to consider, especially as these drives are bound to get better over time, is that you can get the Liteon 812S for about $66 and uograde the firmware to tun it into an 832S. That way your upfront cost is minimal when you get a newer version.
Still a few bugs in the system...

  5. Don't forget about the Mad Dog MegaSTOR 6 in 1! It's a rebadged NEC 2510A that I got at CompUSA for $80 after rebate. The regular price in the New England area is $120

  6. Agent_J; I just ordered a NEC ND-2510A from Newegg.com. After reading some of the reviews on the web and the low price Newegg was asking I decided to go ahead and buy it. I'll let you know how good it works when it gets here. I'll be trying it with DVD+R and DVD-RW. I won't be doing any DL until the price comes down on the media.

  7. I got a e-mail from Newegg today. My order has been shipped. To my surprise it's comming from Edison N.J.. I'm not that far from Edison so hopefully I'll receive it tomorrow or Wednesday. This is my first purchase from Newegg and with service like this it won't be my last.

  9. I would love to try it by burning some DL disc but the media is way to expensive. I can't believe how much cheaper the Nec is compared to what I paid for my Sony

In most electronics (except very high end), Sony is usually more expensive than most. Also the NEC is an OEM drive, so that's another cause for price discrepancy.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

FedEx delivered my new drive today. I'm going to install it and do a burn tonight. I'll let you know how it works. I only have 4X DVDs so I can't do any 8X burning. I usually don't buy new technology devices until they have been out for awhile but I wanted to replace my DVD player and when I saw the price of the Nec ND-2510A I had to go for it.

  12. I have the Mad Dog Multimedia drive (NEC 2510a). Here are my impressions.

    1. Bitsetting is not available. There is a firmware patch at http://www.rpc1.org but it is still beta. Rumor has it that the Sony and LG drives (Same drive so i have heard) are capable of bitsetting.

The NEC 2500 has a firmware patch that allows DL and bitsetting...

    2. I cannot find DL media. But with +r and +rw media it is just a basic drive. I still trust my Sony 500a for my most important material.

I'll let you know more when i get dl media, but if you have to have one now I think that I would recommend the Sony...

  13. Installation of my Nec ND-2510A went without a problem. I burned A 4X Fuji DVD+R and it plays OK on the computer. I'm going to try it on my standalone and see how it plays. Now I need to get some 8X DVDs to try.

  14. I burned my first dual layer disk today (with Nero 6.3.1.17) on my 2510A and it plays fine in our Apex standalone. I'll test it in a couple other standalones I have access to as soon as I can.

  15. What was the media you used? I couldn't get my 2510A to work with a Ridata DVD+R DL disc.

I used the Verbatim (Mitsubishi) DVD+R DL. I read that the 2510A doesn't really support the Ridatas right now. I've tested mine on two standalones so far, and all looks good. I checked the disk with DVDInfoPro afterward, and the booktype is set to DVD-ROM. I thought to be concerned about that *during* the burn, but it turned out fine.

  17. Let me modify my above statement somewhat:

I must have missed it the first time, but in our Apex standalone player, there is a split second (really quick) pause at what is probably the layer break. This doesn't show up in my 2510A, of course. I could pretty much live with that for now, but I'd like to find a way to choose where the layer break can occur. That way I could minimize any distracting (albeit quick)pauses at the layer break.
