For Cinematography, Musical Score and Casting I give EXCALIBUR (1981) the Most Underated Film Award of the 20th Century and 5 Stars. Starring Nigel Terry and directed by John Boorman, no film has been so underrated as this one IMHO. A bold statement, I know. What is your BOLD STATEMENT?

Excalibur is an awesome film, one of the first I got on DVD really. First was Casablanca, which is not really under rated, but I think its way to ignored by almost an entire generation.

As far as under rated films in my life time. KungPow: Enter the Fist. Nobody I know likes this movie, but its SO DAMNED FUNNY.

I don't know if I'd call it the most underrated film, but Arlington Road sure didn't get much attention and its a great movie. Just a really interesting story and a very suprising ending. If you haven't seen it yet then definitely rent it.

Another great sleeper movie was Donnie Darko. Very weird though.

Excalibur was good, especially for the time, but some of the acting just really put me off. I was amazed at how bad Patrick Stewart was, cause I think he's a really great actor even on something like Star Trek that can't showcase his talent. I guess they just had a low budget and had to live with 1st or 2nd takes cause his performance totally blows. I wasn't that impressed with the guy who played Arthur either.

  6. Razor's Edge w/ Bill Murray. Got panned by the critics, but I thought it was a pretty good film with a pretty good story line.

Just my opion, but I thought it was deserving of more attention.

  9. "Pee Wee's Bigtop Adventure"! A classic which should enter the halls of classic moiviedom. Excellent plot, Cinematography, and acting. Certainly one that was missed by both reviewers and the academy awards. Had me on the edge of my seat. Certainly one of the most over-looked films in recent history!

Probably only overlooked because all the critics ran out of the theatre when PeeWee exposed himself!

I'd say Maverick. I think it was kinda popular, but no where near as popular as it should be. If you haven't seen it, do so. It's a comedy western with mel gibson. great movie

I have that and Excalibur on VHS
Leo The Last has been shown on cable a lot recently.

Boorman is probably best known for directing Deliverance
and he did the disappointing sequel to The Exorcist
He also directed Zardoz with Sean Connery, which was pretty popular in the '70s.

I loved Donnie Darko also, but considering the huge clut following it has, and the fact that they are releasing a directors cut to the THEATERS soon I'd hardly call it underrated, just not noticed.

If Donnie Darko counts so does fightclub, almost nobody I knew went to see that film when it came out. I saw it in a dollar theater.

I would really like to see the non-directors cut of this, as that's all thats available today. i'd also like a decent DVD of it to be released....

Criterion laserdisc (CAV and CLV) are available on eBay... I've got one of each, plus the Embassy pan & scan 4:3 LD. All have the narration and the happy ending; the Criterion versions are from the European release and have some additional blood and violence, too.

Found the CAV criterion on ebay UK, runs around $60....
    Maybe next month.

  28. Yeah, those Criterion CAV Blade Runner laserdiscs go for between $35 and $75 a set here in the US, depending on what kind of shape they are in. I don't buy pristine collectibles... if the discs themselves are in decent condition, that's good enough for me.

I did it the budget way and bought the narrated version of Blade Runner on VHS and made a DVD out of it. I have to admit when it came out this was one of the most underrated film of it's time. It was considered a flop by some bozos. No F@#$ing way. It is still a film that can be watched over and over. Rutger Hauer made his career on this one, best role he ever acted out IMHO.

Billy Bob Thornton in 'Slingblade'. I just love those independent films. First time I saw it, I didn't know who BBT was. I was convinced the main character was 'challenged'. That impressed me.

    Bladerunner is also a favorite.
