  2. does it really matter anymore? I finally broke down the other week and replaced my dvd player with one that could also handle +r discs.. (well it was a bonus, i really just wanted one that cropped PAL dvd's properly).

but I don't think its really going to matter, most devices now are being made to handle both formats.... even if -r did come out, it seems +r is giving a much better effort and would be faster.

With the bad experiences (compatablity) people have been having with DL+R, hopefully when it is ready for release and not too early.

In addition to compatibility problems, it might help if its release somehow coincides with the release of reasonably priced media.

Dream on. Mass production and mass acceptance (purchasing) is what drives prices down. +DL media will probably still be expensive by the time -DL drives are out. If we're lucky, -DL media will be comparable to +DL media, but it really depends on how hard the Forum wants to push and whether or not they can convince buyers that -DL is superior. If they can convince people they have an edge, prices will start high and drop as sales go up. If nobody really wants to hop on the bandwagon, it'll be a slow ride to low prices.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  9. Why does it matter? What would you expect to gain from using -R DL instead of +R DL?

Unlike -R vs. +R, -R DL will offer no improved compatibility with +R DL.

The fact that a simple twiddle of the booktype makes +R and +R DL two very compatible formats indicates that the formats themselves are good and compatible, and that the problem lies with drives and devices that just freak out when they see a booktype value that they are not expecting to see. Thus, the reason +R suffered from compatibility problems is that by the time +R came out, -R was already well-established, so more players recognized -R's booktype than +R's.

And the reason why +R DL is doing so abysmally in compatibility is because it's so new and thus even fewer players recognize the +R DL booktype... which is also the fault of those engineers designing the devices--having them freak out when an recognized booktype is encountered instead of doing something productive like defaulting to some preset--wait, some devices actually do that--and those are the ones that work with +R DL! Heh.

Well, -R DL would be even newer, which means that it will likely be even less compatible than +R DL.

Compatibility is a function of time on market, not a function of the format itself.
