I have a Dish 501 DVR, and it has important features you won't find in a DVD recorder. The DVD recorder doesn't have the Dish programming guide, and won't tune Dish channels or set the Dish receiver to the correct channel for recording. On the other hand, the Dish DVR won't do any editing. There is no way to copy from a Dish PVR to the DVD recorder's hard drive faster than 1X.Originally Posted by cahusker

The LiteOn will only give you a puny 12 timeslots, which is less than the Pioneer without a hard drive.
Toshiba and Pioneer models with HD can tune external tuner. 510 (if I have the model number correct) Pioneer comes with Tivo Basic.
