i am interested in trying ffmpegX's dvd>4Gb option under tools to compress my video_ts folder which is 7GB or so. But I guess i need to take all the vob files in this folder and make a single vob out of them that would then be greater than 4Gb? I take this vob and then enter it into the browse field in ffmpegX's tools section and click on dvd>4 button to produce the copressed vob. Is that right?

The only problem is of course how do i make a single vob out of all the vobs in my video_ts folder? FfmpegX will not accept the deencrpyted video_ts that i have for compression via dvd>4; it wants a vob and wont accept those that are less than 4G in size. So do i join all the vobs in the video_ts folder first using the join button under tools in ffmpegX? why is there not more documentation on this method of compression in ffmpegX's manual and other documentation? I know that using dvd2Xone is of course the best method for compression, but i was hoping to try ffmpegX and am missing some understanding to do this in this way.

    thanks,

there doesn't seem to be a way in OSEx for selecting an already decrypted video_ts folder, only a disc, unless i am not seeing something. i looked under opts and read the readme and am still unclear as to how to select the video_ts in order to make that single vob. i have OSEx 0.0101. Thanks for your reply, but can i do this without having the disc on hand?

    thx.

OK, You probably want to make a vob of the main feature in the DVD folder, that's the one with the most vob files, so you use the terminal, let's say it is title 1 you wanna join:

Instructions in red, the stuff you should write in the terminal in black.

cat drag VTS_01_1.VOB into the window and do the same with 01_2 etc. > mymovie.vob

Do I hit enter after typing in cat and then insert the vobs starting with vts_01_0.vob all the way to the end of the main feature? or do i hit enter after having typed in cat, inserted the vobs typed ">mymovie.vob" and then hit enter? because when i do the latter i get command not found. if i do it as described the first way, hitting enter first after "cat" and then after having inserted all the vobs starting with vts_01_0.vob to the last one and finally again after ">mymovie.vob," i get the repeat of the line "mymovie.vob" without quotes and nothing else like terminal is doing some thinking etc.
so i guess i am doing something wrong. where by the way is the resulting vob supposed to end up if i am successful in producing that massive file?

    thanks,

You hit Enter after > mymovie.vob ONLY

So to spell it out the precedure is:

    WRITE: cat BLANK SPACE
DO THIS: Drag the VOBs into the terminal window in the proper order
    WRITE: > mymovie.vob ENTER

And a joined VOB will be created in your home folder.

Thanks. followed your instructions and they worked producing a 6.6 G vob of a main feature that i am currently attempting tocompress using the dvd4 button in ffmpegX. It's been going about 45 minutes now and i don't know how long it will take; i'll leave it overnight i guess. for the purpose of this particular video_ts folder in extracting it using mactheripper i selected only the main feature so i have vts1... files only; for a different extraction, however, the vts files start beginning with 2 . if i want to create a vob of the entire content of the video_ts folder containing this set of vobs, should i stick with only the 1st set of vts files, and disregard the other ones? if i include the other ones, i.e., those next in the series, vts2 etc., will that screw up the reulting vob?

well, while i was writing this the process seems to have failed. I got his error in the information. any ideas?

**ERROR: [mplex] Need to split output but there appears to be no %d in the filename pattern /Users/tabeerbadar/mymovie.vob.4.mpg

thanks for any more help you could give me here,

I guess that you can't, for now. Either use DVD preset to reencode the VIDEO_TS folder, or use 0SEx next time to get a VOB file instead.

if i use the DVD preset to reecnode the video_ts folder, how will i load it into OSEx, because OSEx seems to accept only discs?

    2) if there's way to introduce the reencoded video_ts folder into OSEx, how do i get it to regenerate a vob, or does it do that by itself with you having to indicate to it to produce a vob and not another video_ts folder the way other rippers do?

thanks again and sorry if i sent a double message last time.

You would no longer need to load it into 0SEx or anything else, as reencoding means you can also make it fit in 4GB or whatever.

well after reencoding for approximately 26 hrs, ffmpegX using the dvd preset did produce a .mpg, .mpv, an .mpa, a .img, and a dvd folder containing the video_ts and an audio_ts folder. I did not have the mpeg-2 player component in quicktime so i had to select the mplayer option for decoding. I tried to play the resulting compressed video_ts player. The video was jerky and there was no sound. Could the lack of sound be due to the fact that i had an unidentifiable, i.e., gray, .mpa elemetary audio stream file from which to mux the video_ts folder? (if i wanted to rename this file w/ an .ac3 extension, it would change it and the resulting vlc icon would identify it.) ALso why the jerky video? due to having decoded with Mplayer as opposed to Quicktime?

if i had the quicktime mpeg-2 component installed would it have reencoded quicker than the mplayer and might it have given the audio in the resulting vieo_ts player as well?

finally, if i renamed the .mpa gray file as an .ac3, it does play in vlc, so it does have the entire audio of the film.
i haven't checked the resultant mpeg-2 file, but i assume it will lack the sound.

i'd be grateful again if you could please help me with these problems that arose in this experiment.

    thank you,

    t.a.b.

    p.s.

checked the .mpeg2 file in vlc as well as the resulting video_ts player there. both played with sound and no discernable jerkiness to the video. i wonder if this will play in a standalone dvd player? i then retried the apple dvd player for this compressed video_ts folder. still no sound and jerkiness present in the video. i have tested the apple dvd player with the original video_ts folder and it plays that. so what do you think if you don't mind me asking?

    thanks,

    t.a.b
