OK, this is driving me nuts, cause i'v tried like a 4 different medias, and some of my DVDs are unreadeable at some points, so my movies start to freeze and stuffs like that, and when i try to backup the DVDs again, it's impossible to get the data.
this only happens in rare cases.
I'm planning to backup some programs on DVD, and afraid of lose my files, cause i don't know what's going to happend after some time later.
the media i have right now is "Gigablock", i'm not sure, but i think is that one.
Anyway, what should i do to prevent this kind of problems?, and wich software should i use to prevent data corruptions after some time?.
- nero only allows (disc-at-one), i wonder if this is good or bad.
- record now max, sometimes it crash, i don't trust it.

Both - burner and media. Some burners can write OK to mediocre media, some need high quality media. If you want to backup valuable data please only use good media that is supposed to work good with your DVD writer. Have a look on this site for results. You should check the media information with DVDInfoPro and then compare the results with what other users have found out.
The "brand name" doesn't mean anything.

well, i don't live in the US, so it hard for me to get specific media.
so... assuming that i have mediocre media, wich software do you think that i should use to preserve more in time my data?
---------
unfortunely, DVDinfo doesn't have any tool to check if the blank media is in good shape.

I'm moving this to DVD Writers. It really belongs there

well, technically, it *could* be the software...I've had DVDShrink work where DVD Decrypter would not...(and even moreso, vice versa)

I repeat this so often it's almost sickening...
Data doesn't disappear. It doesn't work that way. (Disc rot is a myth for dye media; it's an affliction of pressed metal media.) Something else happened.
most likely culprits:
- you never checked media to being with
- the reader is no longer good, dirty, etc
- the disc has been warped or thrown off balance
- scratches or other gunk has caused light to refract badly on the media surface
Use good media, on a good burner, CHECK THE RESULTS before dumping the source files, and then use confirmed-good readers/players.
Easy as that.
Like pressed media, phase change materials (RW/RAM) can also breakdown after time (used or not).

Heh...Smurf - I've noticed, a large majority of people that have "disc rot", are also very commonly, people who have the "Sticky Labels wont screw up my DVD's over time, because I watched the DVD with the label and it worked" attitude.. Heh heh.

my affected medias are in perfect conditions. What i don't understand, is that this happens in rare cases. for example :
if i took 10 medias (same brand), at least 2 gets damage after a couple of months, all copieds with same software.
so.... if the rest are compleatly readeble, could be that the disc was not perfect shape before the burning process.
cause my discs don't get damage at all, i mean this happens at specific sectors where the data definetly can't be readed.
-
It's very common a disc could be 'damaged' or rather, flawed, before you burn, yes.. You should always run a verify after the discs are burned, especially if you will no longer have the source they came from. Verification only takes 4-5 minutes on a 16x reader...isnt that worth the peace of mind?
Many MID's have had ink spread problems, where they burn bad towards the end, or some even the beginning. Inspect the bottom of the disc, are there any visible darker (or lighter) spots in the surface of the burned area?
NO media is 100% flawless, ever. Have you tried reading this disc in a different player/PC unit? A lot of players are more picky than others, or just dont like certain types of media to begin with.

Edit: Bad discs have been known to pass verification as well, so even this isnt 100% foolproof.:star: :star: :star: :star:

Yeah, actually, that's what i do most, test the discs in different dvd players and dvd-roms. I have 2 daewoos and a pioneer 343, and everything is ok with these.
But, I think that the "fire proof" that i'm using most right now is the xbox. OHHHH FU#K, that FU#KING piece of shit, don't wanna read anything, most movies that i've copied, starts to freeze when lens is rasing the half of the disc.
i don't have an xbox, but everytime i go to a friend of mine's home, we can't see the movies until the end, cause it crash always at the middle of the movie.
his games are copied in different medias, but i can't find those ones here in my country.
------------------
wich software i can use to check the entire surface of a blank media, and check if it's in good shape before the burning process ?
