  1. Do you feel like helping with cancer research? I found a small package by United Devices that is run with the University of Oxford. The aim of the project is to generate data that can be useful to those researching drugs that help combat.prevent cancer. It utilises idle CPU power, and it is totally invisible. Here is the link for more information, and to the software itself:

    http://www.grid.org/projects/cancer/

It is your choice, but here's how to choose one or the other (smallpox or cancer, or leave it be for equal amounts):

    http://forum.grid.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8800

The team is "VideoHelp (www.videohelp .com)". I couldn't help the space - that's the way it's set out.

I had a lot of trouble writing this. Give it a shot and see if you like it - you can easily uninstall it if you don't like it.

Thanks to any who will help,

    Cobra

I know what you mean. Why on earth would anyone want to help cancer?

    heh,heh

Those progams are kinda cool I had a screen saver for a while that helped process human genome data and another for SETI evaluating radiotelescope data for signs of life. Powerful tools.

You know what I meant! Sorted now...

EDIT - Thanks, Dr.Gee - some relevant input...

Can your chosen screen saver still run?

  7. Yeah, just select it as normal. I use the nVidia Orb.

I installed it,but am wary of the check to win prizes option. You know any more about this?

  9. Where do you see that?

I know for a fact that there's nothing malicious in this package.

I was on an install screen. I cant find where you choose your screen saver.

  11. You right-click your desktop, select "Properties" and click the Screendaver tab. You can select from the drop-down menu.

As for the rewards, I don't know what the situation is. A friends has run this for a year now, and hasn't had any trouble. He's just been racking up points like a post count on a forum, and that's it.

    It's charity, that's all.

  12. My father-in-law was recently diagnosed with cancer -- so Count Me In !!!

I've been doing FOLDING@HOME for a few months now -- but will re-allocate additional spare cycles to this program. No reason you can't run both.

My mother is a cancer survivor from the early 90's.

My father has survived two bouts with cancer (colon and a head tumor) and has just found out last week that he has colon cancer again as well as prostate cancer.... he's upbeat about it...

Anyways - I'm in as well.... already up and running as we speak. It's the least I can do to help....

I'd represent but I'm doing F@H for 2CPU already. Maybe I'll switch over to this one and run that instead. I could use a good burn on my CPUs to test the OC settings. Can't wait to get the 2460 back and use that too. I'll check it out...

  17. Flaystus - I don't know about Macs. Grid/UD don't seem to support them, which is stupid since there's a lot of nice, fast Macs out there. Maybe there's an unofficial package around that can help.

rallynavvie - Thanks for taking a look. I'm going to try to install it on a few more machines at my place - there's an XP2600, an Athlon 900 and another XP2500-based machine but I don't know if I can use them since they don't belong to me.

that's the great thing about XP, set it's icon to be hidden from the task bar and you'll never know it's there

  19. I have been running this for over 2 years now (I think??!!??) on at least 3 machines, sometimes more.

I am a member of the easynews team. Every 15 days of CPU time gives me an extra free 1 Gig download available.
So sorry, I can't join the videohelp team.

AFAIK, doesn't support Macs or Dual CPU's

What are you downloading? Is this from Easynews or grid.org?

Shame about the lack of support for Macs or dual-CPU machines - that's a bit of a waste.

hmmm, didn't think about that! I have about a dozen machines around the house here that are all P3 or better.... might have to fire up a few more and let them chomp away as well.

I'll check it out when I get home tonight...

Thanks. U know you should target hospitals. There are a ton of pcs in hospitals. Good pr for the facility as well
    Quote Quote
  27. I can't target anyone - I'm not associated with UD in any way. I just found it and thought it was cool.

Then I thought about the people here on VideoHelp, with big brutes of video-encoding machines. Plenty of spare power here.

My mother will suggest it at work. All their machines are fairly old, but it's still a whole load more machines to help us out.

If you do the SETI thing, you get to name any discovered races if the relevant data was processed on your machine.

  29. SETI doesn't interest me as much as gaining this data does. That's pretty cool though - they'd be the Cobranians....
