Nope. For a 4GB with a 16X DVD burner, it takes 6 minutes. For a 100GB, it will be 6x25=150 minutes.

It will be probably good for HD movies or archiving of scanned documents.

    Hello,
Yeah that would be nice, no file limit essentially.

Though, just imagine the compatibility issues!! If people are having trouble with dual layer discs just imagine the 100gb monster

It would be a nightmare to lose a project like that, or how about a SCRATCH?!? It could wipe out what, 10 gb in one incident?

Good point Kevin! That is why you would backup the project on your Terabyte keychain.

I wonder if anything will be done to make blanks spin faster.....

16X is the limit, as far as I know, because that is the fastest you can spin current disks without it shattering.

16X may not be an acceptable limit for 100Gb disks! Even if only 150 minutes, that is a lot of time for consumers to accept. And for business - remember, time is money!

Nothing in the article says anything about the materials in the disk. Perhaps it is time for them to move to new technologies?

I am new to purchasing DVD blanks. What is the reputation of RiTek? Are this high quality, mid, or cheap quality?

    Thanks!

I don't think it's the mechanical properties that limit DVD burning to 16X at this time. I think it's the laser technology and how much energy it can deposit into the dye given the short time it's focused on one particular spot.

Ritek DVD blanks were good. Recently, a lot of complaints with their new blank media codes.

I only use maxell, fujifilm and memorex wrapped in jewel cases for my Hi8 and S-VHS tapes and cheapos for commercial DVD movies so that I can put the originals in a safe place and my children can toss around with copied ones.

I have many Ritek CD-Rs and CD-RWs but I have never bought a Ritek DVD blank. Just more convenient for me to obtain my blanks at Futureshop and Best Buy.

You should look at the left hand side "DVD Media" to give you a good idea how good is Ritek DVD blanks.

"16X" spin limit may not even apply to these discs, at least not in those terms. The amount of data on the discs is vastly different. Who knows what X will be for 100GB discs? More than likely they'll be a good bit sturdier (albeit expensive) considedring the amount of data they'll hold. This will most likely be billed as an 'Enterprise Backup Solution' out of the gate, and later marketed to home users who don't mind ponying up big bucks to jump on the bandwagon. I'd bet on a burn time of not more than 2 hours for a "1x" burn at whatever their original speed is when they debut.

Have you looked at Canada Computers? They advertise on the web, and have some good prices, other issues notwithstanding....

So far, Best Buy has not impressed me with prices for anything. Far less expensive at Futureshop, and even better at Wal-Mart, IF they carry what you are looking for. DVD blanks included.

So far, it seems like $1.00 per DVD (in this part of Canada) for good quality is the average. Just paid $0.43 each for two 50 spindles, taxes included, and will be dumping the batch - far too many of then seemed to burn well, but don't run well anyplace, PCs and DVD players included. Guess you get what you pay for....

  13. Imagine just One bad sector in the dvdr though, poof. Imagine you get a bad burn or an unfixable underrun...This and more problems will have to be fixed before anything can be sold, obviously. Lets just see where this one is going (in 5 years when they finish the project)

It might have some form of parity or error checking built-in. More than likely rewriteable will come first or soon after. How many people will need a static 100GB burn? Even with multi-session, 100GB (for now) would seem a bit of a waste.
