Im looking to buy some DVDs.
If you burn at 8x is there less chance they will work on DVD Players? Im just about to order some DVDs thats all and dunno whether to get 4x or 8x.
Thanks

Yep, start at 2x & work faster.
On the left column is a big topic on dvd media that lets you know what works doing what speed. -
Buy good quality discs that are supported by your writer and you'll have no problems burning at 4x, 6x, or 8x. I recommend discs made by Taiyo Yuden (Japan), Maxell (Japan), RITEK (Taiwan), and Mitsubishi/Verbatim (Singapore).

When 8x media started to appear I saw a comment by a well respected media supplier in the UK that once you went above 6x there were some significant differences (sorry, he didn't detail what those were) and he recommended sticking to a maximum of 4x burning.
Possibly the technology has moved on since then, but I have played safe and treat 4x as my maximum. To be honest shaving a few minutes off a burn isn't usually a priority for me. -
Me too.
With 8X disks costing a bit more anyway and not totally certian they are as reliable as 4x anyway, I don't bother worring about saving a few minutes. Normally I don't need the extra 6 minutes or so free time. Although it would be handy on the rare occasion I need 4 copies of the same DVD for clients. I think I will be trying some 8X disk on my next order, but I don't see alot of printable ones
Now I do hate it that all of a sudden I started burning 4x disks at 2x!
Not sure the reason, everything is the same, but only getting a 2x burn and that extra 15 minutes in a pain! I don't even want to think about using up the rest of my 1X disks -
I buy TY and Memorex (Ricoh) +R's rated at 4X which are capable of burning at 8X. However, I set CloneDVD and Nero to burn at Maximum speed (not 8X) and get a burn speed of about 6.5X. I have burned at 8X with no problems, but prefer to use Maximim and let the recorder (BenQ 800A) select the speed automatically. No coasters here.
