My uncle has asked me to make a copy of a back up copy of a DVD so he can take it on a trip without worrying about it being damaged. When I run DVD Shrink it will only allow me to compress the menus and extras to around 80%. The main movie can be compressed to around 55%. Why won't DVD Shrink compress the menus and extars below 80%?

This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours.

DVD Shrink is a compressed domain transcoder, which means it is limited in how it can compress your source. Generally, your video will be made up of motion vector information and DCT data. Transcoders like this can only compress DCT data, and the amount of this data varies in each frame. So your menu's have less DCT data than your main movie, which is why DVD Shrink cannot compress it as much. You can actually run your movie through DVD Shrink multiple times to further compress the menus, but it probably won't make that much difference.

We need to have a "I'm doing something illegal but here's something that makes it seem like I have a legit use for it" random generator.
Like "MY dog has a tendency to piss acid on my dvd collection, so how could I back them up.." kind of things.
No one cares why, we just give the answers. Hell, people could make backups to chew on for all I care. -
how about?
"I make 'purple' backups so I can use the 'silver' originals to scare off the birds eating seeds from my garden" -
how about:
"due to my research on laser technology i'm FORCED to make illegal copies..."With all due respect... and there is respect...
