I knew I could count on you for some sympathy

It's quite scary when it happens - although not as bad as having this kind of thing happen on a motorbike apparently.

  11. BIG END (crank shaft bearings), double entendre

phnar phnar, one of the exclamations that Finbar Saunders from the Viz would make on hearing a double entendre.

This is what Finbar would look like on hearing that vcdhunters big end had gone

    Did I leave anything out

  12. so the "short end" would be the connecting rods or cam shaft?

    BTW, thanks!

  13. The big and small end bearings are at either end of the connecting rod.

The big end bearing is connected to the crankshaft and the small end bearing is connected to the piston wrist/gudgeon pin

    Wait....

Then what do you call the bearings that are between the crankshaft and the block?

  20. Thanks you all for your messages of support and sympathy.

Fnar, Fnar is the sound uttered by Viz Comic Book character Finbar Saunders (see the pic posted by Craig) upon hearing a double entendre (i.e. a statement that has two meanings, in this case my "big end" which actually means something mechanical but which could also mean my bell end).

It was a Toyota Starlet which I had given to me by my mate as he didn't want it anymore.

[breath finally catches while tears from the eyes]

    [ROF with tears streaming out]

    [whimpers hyserically] "Toyota Starlet"

Sorry man. Sucks to be without a car. [snickering continues]
