  1. Soon i can update my DVD-writer so it can burn "double layer". Now my question is: do all standalones play these DVD's or not, or will it depend on certain brands, series,......??

All DVD Players will play Dual Layer discs , remember that most of the commercial DVDs we buy are Dual Layer.

I 'm not sure if anyone has successfully burned a D/L disc yet , even to play it on a PC , let alone play it on a standalone player.

  4. Hello,

Does anyone know if Pioneer will release firmares for the DVR-104 and the DVR-106 to make them dual layer compatible?

I know the DVR-104 is - writer but i've heard the -R/RW DL format specification is close to completion!

Also if anyone knows, if LG will release a firmware for GSA-4082B DVD Writer to make it dual layer compatible?

    Thanks,

Adam , you should start a new topic for your question it won't get seen hidden in someone elses topic.

As for pioneer if they did do firmware it would likel;y be for the 107 but more likely not and the'll probably bring out a 108 for D/L.

But at £14.99 for 1 DVDDL+R , and the fact that the results so far have been far from encouraging ( ie they don't work).

I think it better to wait till they start working properly otherwise is a lot of money to throw away . There are no RW discs as yet for D/L so if you get it wrong its in the bin.

  6. Few players play customer written double layer disks.

These aren't nowhere near commercial authoring media double layer disks, which are $$$.

  7. Ta Andyp1,

I'm sure i saw an english website selling DL Disks for £8.99 when i searched using google!

I suppose your right, it'll most likely be for the DVR-108!

Might as well wait until the second generation DVD-RW DL writers are out and the initial problems have been solved with the first generation drivers.

    Once again, thanks!

    Regards,

  8. Andyp1 you write:

Can you be more specific Andyp1, how come homebrew double-layer-DVD 's won't do it, what is actually the difference with commercial, what do they have more then?

authoring media only comes in two flavors: 3.95 gb and 4.7 gb which only record on the pioneer s-101 and s-201 authoring recorders, smaller laser wavelength

not sure what youre talking about, "authoring media" double layer discs dont exist

  10. I take it was is ment is commercial disks that are pressed rather than burned. I've seen mixed results on double layer media which I can't even buy yet let alone at a resonable price. If you change the bit settings to DVD-ROM I have heared that they do work in quite a few players. Until the disks are available to a few more people we won't know how good they are.

    As above

Commercial discs are pressed together they are not made by burning them.
I have seen various threads on this site and it looks like the discs burned play upto the switch between layers and then have problems , I'm sure it won't be too long before they figure it out.
