I had a 1Ghz / 384 ram PC and convert a avi movie (600 mbs) to mpg in around 2.5h.
Just like to know will maybe a 2Ghz processor shorten the converting time by much?

Fact is stranger than Fiction

Faster processor = faster conversion times for the most part. Interseting use of the word "fasten" :P

There are lots of other factors to consider. The size of the processor's cache makes a big difference, and the speed of the RAM is a big plus, too. A 2Ghz processor with a larger cache (ie an Athlon or Pentium IV) will probably cut your encoding time down by at least half.
Editing and conversion from differing file formats is something I don't do, but an extra Ghz will be felt there, too."It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..."
