  1. any ideas on how to do this? any free ones out there that are good?

    You could try SUPER or MediaCoder - both are free.

    Real Media is not a great one for converting.

    I'd advise using Super. There's a really old program called TINRA that can convert RM to AVI, but I don't recommend it. If I remember correctly, it generates uncompressed AVI files from the RM souce - that's if it works at all. Sometimes it doesn't work at all on some sources. Nobody knows why. It's no longer being supported.

    RM is usually pretty crappy because the encoders do a lot of nasty things to reduce file size, like dropping frames and using incredibly small resolutions. Don't expect miracles and don't be surprised if your video looks like garbage after it's converted.
