I got an Artec DVD rom drive and a Pioneer DVD-R drive on secondary IDE channel. DVD rom drive is the slave. Both are set to Use DMA if Available. Pioneer DVD-R drive is using Ultra DMA mode 2. But the Artec DVD rom drive uses PIO mode. Is that a bad thing ? I have tried removing the drive and redetecting it, but get same results.

Not familiar with the Artec drive, but your information implies that the drive may not support UDMA (which is a bit strange for a DVD-ROM).
Have you checked the drive specs? The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
