In spite that TMPGEnc claims it recognizes (MS) DV AVI Type 2 natively, it fails to load this type of AVI files if I disable the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader in the VFAPI plugin list.
It would be nice to be able to use the Type 2 AVI support (if it really exists) in TMPGEnc, because there won't be the loss of going through YUV->RGB->YUV. CinemaCraft does this, but I only have TMPGEnc.
Did anyone successfully use Type 2 AVIs with TMPGEnc, in this particular way? I am pretty sure I have the right AVIs, because I processed them with the Canopus DV File Converter.
Best regards

I realize that money can sometimes be tight. I myself am going through a tough financial time at the moment BUT my point is ... CCE BASIC is only $58 and it is money WELL SPENT.
Why?
Because it is faster than TMPGEnc and more flexible (when used in conjunction with AviSynth scripting) and uses the YUY2 colorspace.
So forget TMPGEnc and "bite the bullet" and purchase CCE BASIC.

The reason why TMPGEnc fails to load DV files if you disable the DirectShow reader is because the MS DV decoder is for DirectShow and not Video For Windows (VFW). Try installing the Canopus DV codec if you are using Canopus DV file converter otherwise use the Panasonic DV codec. Both are VFW codecs and free.
Do you remember when TMPGEnc needed an English patch? -
When I read the note that TMPGEnc supports DV AVI Type 2, I thought that this support is built into TMPGEnc, and it's not based on 3rd-party DV codecs installed in the system (neither for DirectShow, nor for VfW). I was hoping that I could get extra quality by avoiding the loss from passing through YUV4:1:1 (DV NTSC) to RGB (the only colorspace recognized by TMPGEnc's VfW and DirectShow reader) to YUV4:2:0 (MPEG).
But it seems that TMPGEnc's ad regarding DV Type 2 only refers to the capability of processing this type of AVI, as opposed to Type 1 - unfortunately, there is still a need for codecs, and I cannot avoid going through RGB.

Maybe I'll follow FulciLives' advice and go for CCE Basic. Canopus Procoder seems to be another very good solution that goes from DV to MPEG directly, without passing through RGB, but that's too expensive for me.Cosmin
