To make smartripper work faster, this guy told me to update my IDE controllers. What are those and where can i go to update them?

I read your DVD rip post (very slow rip). Yes, it could be due to the fact that your DVD-ROM supports UDMA but your system does not. Upgrading to a better IDE controller (with UDMA) would help (if that's really the root cause).
You can get a Promise UDMA-33 controller card for about 19$ at Frys (The UDMA-66 is for 29$ last year and UDMA-100 for 49$).
Note that UDMA controller simply mean IDE controller with UDMA support. There are many different rating, UDMA-33, UDMA-66 and UDMA-100 available now (UDMA-133 coming next).
The higher the number, the faster is the data transfer rate and the more it costs. However, the max transfer rate (and therefore the rip speed) is also dependent on your DVD-ROM speed rating (8X, 10X, 16X, etc...)
