yea avi to dvd prob with winavi

yea i dled dumb and dumber from kazza and then i used it in my sonic dvd program and it said i was 1gb short of space with a 4.7 gb disc using a 650mb file, the file is avi format and my sonic dvd enlarged it alot, i used winavi to tale it from .avi to a dvd file but when it did that , i could not longer put the movie on sonic dvd i could only burn it on winavi, but when i burned it the movie was all choppy and the audio was messed. can someone tell me what program is best for converting avi files so i acn burn a dvd rip movie from the net. i need to make the avi to a dvd file so it is small enough to fit on a disc.

The best way to do this is to go out and spend the $15 on the actual DVD.
