The article did not state whether it could burn both layers at 16 speed. It can be found here http://money.cnn.com/2004/06/22/technology/philips.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes

And here is the the text if you don't want to follow the link:
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Philips Electronics has launched the world's first 16-speed DVD writer, which can burn a disc in under six minutes, the Dutch company said Tuesday.

U.S. computer maker Dell will be the first customer for the new DVD burner, sources told Reuters. Philips and Dell (DELL: Research, Estimates) have a partnership to supply each other with products.

Philips said it planned to produce 600,000 of the devices every month. Computer makers will pay between 80 and 90, or $97-$109, per DVD writer when buying in large quantities, while consumers will have to pay around 180.

The product, which has two layers that take the maximum storage capacity up to 8.5 gigabytes or four hours of DVD-quality video, will be a mainstream feature in personal computers by the end of 2004, Philips said.

Until now, eight-speed burners were at the top of the range.

DVDs were designed to store film and video. With the advent of digital video cameras and still cameras, consumers are increasingly interested in editing their videos on a personal computer, then burning them on a DVD for storage or for sending to other people.

Philips' optical storage unit, which was also the first with an eight-speed DVD burner last September, returned to profitability in 2003 after heavy losses as a result of Asian competition.

More than likely only single-layer @ 16x. Don't think DL 4x is even standardized yet.

That's right . LG do a 12X burner at the moment. Here's the link to it but it only does dual layer at 2.4X
I wouldn't expect that one tobe any different.

They keep bringing these things out but there is no media to use anyway.

    No read it again

Its like the LG says this
    LG GSA-4120BA Dual Layer 8.5GB 12x DVD Beige +/-R/RW/DVD-RAM
But it is 12X for +R and 2.4 for DL

It will only be +R that will write at 16X

Did I see someone say that nobody makes a DL DVD player yet? You do realize that every DVD player available plays DL discs because most of the production discs are DL. Or at least that is how I understand it. Maybe you meant DL DVD R?
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

I see what you are saying .

But using that theory , every DVD Player should play any DVD disc but that just isn't the case.

As for DL DVD+R discs we'll have to wait and see how compatible they are.

andy you are absolutely right. I am no saying they will play them properly. But to say there are no DL DVD players is absurd. They do exist, every DVD player available plays DL, they just may not be compatible with DL backups
