  1. Which DVD burner is compatible with Verbatim DL?
I am going to get a new one since I got two coasters and this burner won't burn them. I am just going to go to walmart or something.

Rather than recommend specific burners, I'd like to point out that there could be other things at work here.

    1) You might have burned with Nero, which is a bad idea. We recommend using ImgBurn for all DL burning. Nero doesn't always set the layer break correctly and it may just simply not work for some burns. We had a post about the latter earlier this week.
    2) DVD-R DL (note that minus sign) is VERY VERY different from DVD+R DL and if you neglected to mention that you are using DVD-R DL discs, all bets are off. Only ImgBurn can correctly burn these discs and even then it may require some special configs by you to get it to work correctly.

Your burner, which you should have listed, may need a firmware upgrade to burn DL media. You might try that before you buy a new drive. Although I don't hear a lot about them, I have an older NEC drive that just works like a champ for me.

  4. I used imgburn to burn the DVD DL and it gave me an error twice. I just got a new drive and I'll see how it goes. I used DVD+R DL.

  5. The new Sony drive started the burn process, but later gave me an error.
This is now my third coaster.

Two questions - at what speed were you writing, and when did you get the Verbatim discs? If you got them recently, check the "Made in" label. A lot of the recent ones were made in India, and there have been nothing but complaints about them.

Also, what is the exact model of the burner you got?

And even though you just bought it, you may still want to check for new firmware for it. It's possible a new firmware version came out after the drive left Sony.

SONY no longer makes DVDwriters. They have relabeled several different makers drives of varying quality.

I'd consider returning this drive and buying something you know the manufacturer of. This means not buying SONY, IOMagic or any other company which does not make what they sell. It gives you a better chance of prompt firmware updates, and technical support.

At the recommendation of Budz (thanks again !), I bought a Samsung SH-S202G (IDE interface) and it writes perfectly when using the Verbatim dual-layer DVD-Rs. I have no experience with SATA burners, but if you are considering IDE drives as well as SATA, the SH-S202G should make you happy.

    Good luck with your purchase.

Right now they're all Samsung drives, which are about on par with Pioneer (the best drive) for burn/rip/read quality (Pioneer still reads/rips a bit better, but BURNING is the most important aspect!).
