I have an MPEG-2 video with AC-3 audio that came from some pretty rough source material (from 1981!), and I'm wondering if anyone has a fairly simple method to improve the video or remove hiss from the audio.
I'd prefer not to demux, as I often hit audio sync problems when I do. (I'll give it a shot, if there's no alternative, though.)
Is there a simple application that can just run through the video and try to remove some of the noise and imperfections?
Thanks for any advice.

since you will have to re-encde it -- you will have to de-mux it ... in most cases ...
you can load the whole thing including the ac3 into procoder 2 or tmpgenc or main concept and clean it up with the various filters they have ... but not to much on the audio end --- but they will save it out as a wav file and you can clean that with soundforge or goldwave .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I've been looking to do the same thing as you. I havn't found the perfect solution yet. But you can try Virtualdub-MPEG2, you can use filters to remove noise, and there are tons of filters you can find on the net that might help out. But the downside is that it doesn't produce mpeg-2 files, just imports them. You can make AVI files and all that with it, but you would have to use another program to encode it back to mpeg-2 files, which is a lot of work, and I bet you would loose quality if you go from mpeg2 to AVI back to mpeg 2. You might be able to use it as a frameserver to another program like TMPGEnc, but it will still re-encode it and it will loose some quality.
Does anyone know of any program that would remove noise and clean up a mpeg2 file without changing or modifing the bitrate or re-encode it? Something that could remove noise, but otherwise leave the file alone? I think a program like that would helps us both out. -
you have to re-encode it --
