Aussie charged for killing shark
By AP
CANBERRA, Australia -- An Australian diver who says he speared a grey nurse shark in self-defence faces charges for killing an endangered species. "I thought it was either the shark or me," the man told the Daily Telegraph. "I was convinced it was trying to eat me."
A state fisheries officer found the spear fisherman on a beach north of Sydney with a dead 10-kg grey nurse shark on June 9. Grey nurse sharks are considered dangerous to humans, although the speared animal was identified as an immature one.
The man may be the first person charged with killing a nurse shark under state law.

"Terminated!" :firing:

10kg not exactly a whopper, sounds like they think he was fishing for them.

I agree with Craig, sounds like he was fishing for them. In certain places around here you regularly swim with small sharks without worry of being attacked. I could understand if he was a tourist but by the sounds of it he was a regular diver.
Depending on the location he might also be breaking the law by spear fishing. -
Why would you go diving with a speargun if not for fishing? Is this guy gonna get THE BOOT a la Simpsons.

It was a 10 kg shark. That's about the size of a big-ish cat. The chances of a little one like that attacking you is close to zip and if he was a spear fisherman (usually implies an experienced watersportsman), he would know that.
It sounds like he was fishing for it.
