I recently installed the 6.0.5 Toast update. Just before I did I bought a 25 pack of "Platinum 1-4X DVD-R" Media. I burned a couple DVD's no problem with 6.0.3. After I installed the update Toast will not burn these DVD's I just bought. I get this error message only with the "Platinum" DVD's, other brands work fine:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x44
INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE
I have a bunch of these DVD's left. Should I just re-install 6.0.3?
Anyone else had this problem?

Hi ... not a strict answer to your poblem , but I have nothing but issues with toast6.
If i run toast 6 , all my burns ( Ritek G04 ) fail on varify, If i reboot and run toast 5.2 , Reburn the same disks, they all pass.
If i then launch T6 , quit T6 without doing anything, launch t5.2 and repeat the method of burning the same disks on the same media , they will all fail.
Seems T6 ( 6.0 & 6.0.3 & 6.0.5) is messing with the IO on my system and screwing it up.
I for one , will stay far away from T6
try toast 5 is my answer, sorry i cant offer any better assistance -

In your case , if you didn't see a message similar to this one:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0xxxxx
immediately following the error you described, then you can probably rule out #3. I say probably, because not knowing your particular set-up,
such as What brand of DVD-r burner you have, if you have done the
Apple Superdrive patch or not, if this is an internal or external drive,
what version of the OS X you are using, etc.
#2 refers to strictly HOW you are accessing the data...is this from a DVD2ONeX backup...Are you trying to make a copy of a DVD from
another drive, how full is your HD, how full is your Roxio Converted Items folder, etc. Again, not having enough info, I cannot begin to say it is probably not #2 either...
and last #1, points to an internal start within the Application itself.
Most likely if this is your culprit, this can be easily fixed by
Running your daily crons, and from Disc Utility, either from
your orignal Jaguar/Panther Disc, repairing permissions
on your HD. Which you SHOULD do after doing ANY updates
to applications and the OS itself.
I can vouch that I have Toast 6.05 installed here at home,
on a G4 Dual 1, with 1.25GB of Ram, running OS X 10.3.4,
and Toast 6.05 runs great. I also use TDK 2x media, as
it burns a full DVD in less than 22 mins in my Apple Superdrive DVR-104.
I also have Toast 6.05 installed here at work in several iMacs, EMacs,
G4's and G5's, all running Toast 6.05 and various flavors of
OS X ( 10.28, 10.33, 10.34) and Toast works fine.
So, Please post more about YOUR setup, and I will try and help. -
I wouldn't rule out the media. If you have the Bencole Platinum Series from Microcenter from around April, I know someone else that had major problems with them. If they will work with 6.03, I'd reinstall 6.03 and finish the batch. The person I know had problems with 10.3.4's Disk Burner. He could burn the disk, but then it wouldn't mount.
I'm using Toast 6.05 with a 105 & 107 without any problems. -
This type of hardware error means you have a problem with the drive or the media. Rebooting the Mac or powering off the drive for several seconds some times resets the drive and the problem goes away.
If the problem is the media, changing the media is the only option. If you change media and you still get the error there is a good chance you drive is going out.
I suggest updating the firmware with the region free version that is out now if you have a Pioneer drive (see other post on this board). The updates adds lot of media support and that may fix the problem without buying new media.
I run Toast on dozens of machines with countless different drives, and I don't have problems with it at all. Hardware errors are not related to Toast at all. Toast just displays the error for the drive.
I do not recommend running Toast 5 then 6 then back to 5, etc. This can corrupt preferences, etc and that can cause problems.
Also, verification errors are almost always related to problems with the system, not Toast. -
The verification errors in my case were related to bad memory.... Althou apple hardware test passed the memory as ok , the moment i replaced it , all the probs went away....
Just goes to show you doesnt it.
So i suggest , pulling all PCI cards , and testing each ram back on its own

I'm pretty sure it is a problem with the media. I got them from Microcenter. Other brands burn with no problem. I'm going to try and repair my permissions and see if that works. If not I'm just going to re-install 6.0.3. I've already turned five of the discs into coasters.
I for one really like toast 6. This is the first time i've ever had a problem.
Many thanks.

Most likely I agree, it's probably the media.... -
