    here's a (sorta) easy way.

    - make your shape in whatever graphics program you choose. make it a two-color picture, with a solid color shape against a (different) solid color background.

    - use the Magic Wand, select the shape.

    - go up to Help -> Export Transparent Image. Follow the prompts. Save as a .png file (supports mulitple levels of transparency).

    - open the image you want in the shape. add a new layer on top. cut and paste the .png with the transparent shape on the top layer over your image.

merge the whole thing down, crop to size, do whatever you need to it....

New image, with TRANSPARENT background. Draw picture on the square canvas.

Pick the CIRCLE lasso, hold <SHIFT> key so it stays perfect circle. Drag to what you want.

Goto SELECT -> INVERSE. It now selects the stuff you DONT want. Hit DELETE. That other junk is now gone.

Crop down with CROP tool just outside the edges of your new circle.

Save as a PSD or GIF files. PSD suggested for printer use. GIF for web use.

    Done.
