  1. Hi everyone,

I just got this Philips DVP642 and experiencing this problem before and after firmware upgrade (04/09). I put in a divx/xvid disc and it would play the movie out in PanScan mode even when I change the mode to letter box or 16:9 through the System menu. I put in a real dvd movie that has the format of 16:9 and it plays it as 16:9 but I can't change to other modes (ie panscan).

    Thanks

The menu option's on DVD player,16:9 or 4:3,refer to the type of TV they play on not the DVD disk. The DVD disk will play the way it's ifo file tells it to play, you cannot change that. I have a DVP642 and all the DIVX file I've played have played the they were encoded. 4:3 or 16:9 play in correct ratio. I have my player set as 4:3PS because I'm using a 4:3 TV.

  3. Then that is very weird, because I have a divx file of my backed up movie that if I play it on my computer, it would be in 16:9. But if I put it in the DVP642, it would do the panscan mode or zoomed in on my 4:3 TV not 16:9 (ie with 2 black bars on top and bottom).

Problem could be the frame size the DIVX was encoded at. 640x352 would be correct for a 16:9 movie. Are you sure the DIVX was encoded at a true 16:9 ratio.

  5. I believe my divx frame rate is: 720X416

But from your thinking, there is no way that the problem I'm experiencing is from the player but the divx file?

    Thanks for helping.

Another post in here (in the long DVP642 thread) said that any file that's 720xsomething automatically gets stretched to fill up the screen. Seems to be a bug in the player.

  7. As of right now, there is no cure for this right?

Anyone know when the next firmware upgrade going to be? Thanks
