I have an Elion DVD player which is supposed to play CDs with MP3 files.
I burned a CD with some low bit rate MP3s (24 kbps mono).
The player recognized only one of them (why?) as an MP3, but even then it would not play it. The file (program) duration is one hour, but the player thinks it is 10 seconds, and that's how long it takes to silently run through the file.
This is not very useful to me. I was hoping to archive a lot of audio material on a single CD.
Is this unique to the Elion ? Do MP3 players (including portable CD players that can play MP3 CDs) have the same apparent limitation, i.e. play only 128 kbps stereo MP3s ?

I didn't think it mattered. I have a Cyberhome CH-300 and it has trouble with very high bitrates (320kbs) and variable bitrates.
Have you checked the DVD player reviews for your model? -
There is no standard for mp3, so it's up to the manufacturer and how they wish to implement it. There are players that will only accept certain bitrates (usually 128kb). You may find that it is in the manual somewhere, possibly on the last page with the detailed tech specs for the player.

24kbit? Sheesh, is that intelligable?
I can barely stand 64k! But to each his own eh.
I ran tests on my apex, and it will play all rates from 64k
up to 320k. It may have even played 56k mono but I don't remember.
But for sure 64k stereo and up. This is a two year old machine.
But I'd check for myself rather than believe what some dork
like me says.
I'd imagine newer ones at the very least do this, but I haven't tried
my Daewoo or Philips. I'm done with MP3 testing. Frau is how.
My fav compromise minimum bitrate for music is
192k, maybe 128k for voice. -
Believe it or not, 24 (32 better) kbps is OK for voice only programs (not for music).
Great way to archive programs [you name them...] from NPR, for example.
Of course, WMA, RealMedia, or AAC work better at the same bit rates, but it's only recently that players have started including these codecs.

It depends on the player. I have lots of radio shows from the early 20th century, literally thousands, maybe tens of thousands. They all use very low bitrates, no need to be higher since readio of the time was the same quality.
Some players play, some do not. My Toshiba and Cyberhome are great. The Apex "plays" them, but no audio comes out.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
