Taiyo Yuden is top class media, Ritek is just good but cheap. So TY is better.

  3. TY = Excellent, but expensive
    Ritek = Not-quite-so-good-but-good-enough. Cheap.

  4. there's also the not-so-obvious

bulk yudens are squeaky, while bulk riteks smell like maple syrup

  7. Taiyo Yuden - All other media is shit.

    Why?

With the exception of the bottom disc on the stack, I've never burned a coaster with them.

Am interested to know whether this is based on ..

    1. They burn better or,

    2. They play on more stand alone players.

    Both.

Nobody has ever returned a Taiyo Yuden DVD-R to me and said, 'this disc won't play in my DVD player."

And when you've burned over 2,000 DVDs and can count the total bad burns on your fingers, that's a pretty good disc manufacturer.

Taiyo Yuden = Great quality; premium price ($1.15 ea); highly reliable; TY+R's can burn at 8x without worry of bad writes beyond the 4GB mark demonstrating consistant reads during playback.

Ritek = roll of the dice quality; reasonably price; be willing to accept occasional failures or at times an entire bad 50pk batch; buring Ritek+R's beyond the 4GB may lend to bad write errors resulting in freezing on playback

I back up my TOP PRIZED DVDS on to Taiyo Yudens!

Those DVDs I could care less about losing or lending out to others, I burn on Riteks.

Do you use labels or print direct to them and what actual brands are they.

I am in Australia and would try what you suggest but woulkd like to know actula brand names.

I bought soem exy Maxwell and TDK's that everyone said worked on everythi ng and they too were returned to me. I have burnt several undred Princo's with 6 or so returns. Uded labels.

I sent back a Epson R200 printed Princo and they said it worked this time so that muts have been the label.

The old Maxell 2x DVD-R discs and the somewhat newer Maxell 4x DVD-R discs are very good.

I'd say they are very nearly as good as Taiyo Yuden. Maybe even just as good.

Please note though that the last 10 pack of Maxell 4x DVD-R discs that I bought were actually TYG01 aka Taiyo Yuden.

From what I've heard Maxell will sometimes use Taiyo Yuden when they can't keep up with demand with production of their own discs.

So Taiyo Yuden or Maxell ... can't really go wrong with either.

I have been using Princo with a label that I had printed commercially (not InkJet) and they have worked in 98% or so players.

As a replacement I sent a Maxwell MXL RG01 and it too was returned. It also had the same printed label.

I have now sent a Princo with a direct InkJet print on it and hope it has corrected the problem this time like it has 3 other times before.

  17. No Princos for me they tend to delete data after a year. But great for the short time & testing.

You can test 4x Riteks G04 to see if they work on your writer by paying $4 for two, includes shipping at meritline. I don't have any Ty's to test yet since they are $2.50 almost every store I order from but perhaps I should get some at Rima.

So I far I only use Accus as these play in every dvd player & writer & xbox & ps2 I have; but the ps2 (sometimes a few tries) seems to prefer Panasonics for games.
