If you only want to watch your footage on a computer then I would recommend DivX or XviD codecs applied using VIrtualDub. If you wish to watch on a standalone DVD player then you need to encode to MPEG-2. My tool of choice is TMPGEnc Plus. All you need to do to fit omre on one DVD is lower the bitrate.
If in doubt, Google it. -
From your original post, I'm guessing you haven't done this before, so Jimmalenko's response probably needs to be elaborated on.
To play this back on a DVD, you need to convert the avi to DVD compliant mpeg-2 (jimmalenko's recommendation of TMPGEnc is as good as any), and then author it as a DVD. The authoring process creates the files required for a standalone DVD player to recognise and play. You can choose, at this time, to create menus as well, however these can very simple.
I would check out the authoring guides to the left -> start here https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?howtoselect=3;6#3;6
I haven't used TMPGEnc DVD Author, but it is often recommended here, especially for quickly setting up a simple disk.
