I'm asking in terms of writing quality and 8X media compatibility. I don't care about firmware hacks and the like.

As always, thanks for your input.

  2. Unless you are getting either for less than $50, I'd look at the SOHW-1213S or the DVR-108. The 1213S runs almost the same price as the 812s, and the 108 is just under $100. I chose the 108 based on my great experience with the 106 and 4x+DL. It should be here in a few days. Lots of happy forum members use Pioneer drives, just do a search.

    Best of Luck,

Dual layer media will be very expensive. I'd wait until prices of dual layer media come down. I wouldn't want to pay $10.00 a disc. If you can afford dual layer media then purchase the Pioneer 108. The Pioneer 107d is a good drive. It'll be put on my next computer that will only do video editing. Lucky I have a Antec computer case where I can easily remove my optical drives. No screws need to be removed the dvd burners slide out easily. I'd suggest you purchase a 107d but remember it's reading 2x speed is locked. In order to rip dvds at a faster speed you would need to use the hacked firmware. Or just get a dvd-rom to rip dvd files.

Thanks for the info - I could care less about dual layer: I'm not paying $10 for a blank disc, that's just plain crazy. I can wait 2-3 years for the prices to drop. As for DVD ripping, I always use a DVD-ROM. The price difference between the 107 and 108 at Newegg is only $14, so there's a big incentive to go with the 108. Dunno now. Decisions, decisions...

Even if you're not doing DL, the 108 does 12x and 16x on SL media vs 8x on the 107. I'd say go for the 108.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.
