I just saw that they are now under 200$ ( 187 for a sony!)
Wow they really went down.
Now my question is to anyone who has one...would we be able to back up all our dvds instantly or do we need a program?
I have a single layer and I use an authoring program (free software).
ANyone used it already?
any comments?

quality of burn, media quality & compatibility will be the 3 biggest things that dvd+r9 will face.
if they make good drives, good media & enable bitsetting (which i presume will make the discs compatible in most standalone dvd players) then they should have no problems..
well until the chepo depot ******** come in and try to pass their shit off.. but that always happens. -
Dual = +/-, these have been around for years.
Are you talking about, double layer? Forget it for now, they do it at 2.4x, & double layer media is $14 per disk for Verbs. Therefore, takes about an hour per disk.
Sony doesn't make them anymore, they just rebag.
Also, should be near $100 after rebate on some web sites. as there is a $30 sony rebate. -
Yeah i WAS talking wabout double layer(dual) I know they have been around foryears but they were much more $$$.
You are saying you saw some at around 100? which website and do you know of cheap media that would work with it?Thanks in advance! -
They have only just come into general release, so I would give the market time to settle down into some kind of standard before buying. I'd wait for at least the second gen, even third gen, of dual-layer burners. I waited until the smoke cleared before I bought my GSA-4040B, and I couldn't be happier with it.

At this moment, it is a pity that any DVD9 (dual layer) +/_R or RW discs produced by your dual layer DVD writer can't be recognised with your home DVD player as the standard of format with DVD9 is different from that with DVD5. They are only recognised with your DVD writer and the manufacturers of the DVD writers have not yet supplied any firmware to sort out the said problem.
