I have a 1GHz P3. I will be buying a standalone DVD recorder to capture and encode my VHS tapes to DVD-RAM.

I want to take the MPEG2 file that is on the DVD-RAM and cut out parts I don't want. Nothing fancy.

Will my PC be fast enough or will it be sluggish?
Or should I buy a new PC?

Also, my current PC doesn't have a DVD drive.

  2. Cutting video doesn't require a fast system, since all you're basically doing is marking the parts you don't want and copying the rest to another file. So the answer is no, you don't need another system.

You will need a drive that can read DVD-RAM (I think many DVD-ROMs will).

    Broadway,

What DVD recorder do you have? I'm looking to do the same thing, transfer VHS to DVDs but I haven't had any luck because my AIW card is detecting my home VHS tapes with macrovision. Respond back if you are successful in recording your VHS tapes on DVD-RAM. I'd like to know how it good it works.

    Thanks alot,

    alstatr

    alstatr,

I don't actually have a DVD recorder yet, but I am leaning strongly towards the JVC DR-M10SL. It doesn't have a hard drive which is the only minus.

For VHS tapes with Macrovision, you'll need to buy a device to remove it.
But since you have AIW, have you checked out this webpage
http://www.digitalfaq.com/capture/atimpeg/atimpeg.htm which talks about getting rid of Macrovision on AIW cards?
