I have multiple avi files that I wish to convert to DVD or SVCD. No matter what I do I cannot load them and get them to be recognised by either Virtual DUb or TMPGEnc.
I have run AVIcodec and got the following info on one of the files
    File : 236 MB (236 MB), duration: 0:17:48, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 58 %

    Video : 220 MB, 1731 Kbps, 23.980 fps, 512*384 (4:3), MP41 = MS MPEG4 V1, Supported

    Audio : 16.30 MB, 128 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

When I attempt to load in to Virtual Dub I get the following error:

Couldnt locate decompressor for the format 'MP41' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatiable codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, suc as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

    TMPGEnc gives me this error:

File "D:\working Folder\Filename.avi"can not open, or unsupported.

I can figure out that neither of these programs support conversion of MPEG4 is there any programs that do support this sort of conversions?

Any leads or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    I installed ffdshow as advised.
Rebooted and tried again. No change in errors. Had a read and it seemed to be some sort of Avisynth script. Not real good with scripting (never got a real good hand of UNIX )

Since my first post a few hours ago I have come across 'Boilsoft AVI to VCD SVCD DVD Converter' This ripps the audio out to mpg but no video to go with it.
    VHS is a dying breed
    Sad but true.
