Hi all. Just got my new toy! Nero info tool and other utilities shows it as a 4x drive. Can't seem to change this. Media burns at 6x though! I am guessing that a firmware update is needed? No firmware updates yet that I can find. Or is this issue with Nero, etc. not yet fully supporting this drive. Thoughts anyone?

  2. Showing as a 4x drive? What do you mean?

What is your current firmware revision? The latest known firmware is VY02. That is most likely what you have (though if you have something other than VY02, I think there will be people like me who would love to get it).

  3. i'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the drive "Can't" out of the box burn @ 8x to +R or -R media. A simple firmware upgrade will solve that but it won't be for a couple of weeks at least. There's info on Sony's site I believe.

  4. It can burn 4x TY media at 8x.

But whatever the case, the 4x at 8x limitation will never be "resolved" by an official firmware update. Fortunately, there is a free & easily available tool out there that lets you "fix" this problem yourself.

Are you talking about hacked firmware or a "flash?" I am really leery of that since it can trash your burner.

  6. To do 8x you need to use media that does 8x on the sony. Not just any 8x media. What media does what speed on what writer with what firmware is found on the media topic, left column, or meritline.com

  7. *nods* If you're wary of unofficial firmwares, you will have to buy 8x-certified media. Newegg is also a good place (I personally don't trust Meritline's shady service record)

  8. i've had the DRU-700A for a few days and it's been excellent thus far. Has burned nothing but successful disks which is the same as my other burners, and what i'd expect. So it's great that there aren't any problems with single layer media. Will await patiently my batch of DL media and test those out. The price of DL media has already been much less then all the naysayers expected. Of course, all those people were the ones that said DL burners would never exist. Kinda makes me wonder how the same people have the sack to continue to post with the same B.S as in some of the other DL threads on this forum as well as others. Gives me a good laugh.

Can't wait to read their responses when DL becomes household and the soon to be common standard. It won't happen overnight, but won't be long once the price drips nicely enough and compatibility is proven.

  9. Nero Infotool might be too out of date to notice a 8xer.
