Followed the instructions here, http://dvd-hq.info/Compression.html (linked from this site), and I know that at the beginning, the author directed me to choose NO audio for the rip. This leads to 3 questions:

    1) What program should I use to rip the audio?
    2) Is there a walk-thru/step-by-step guide for that process?
    3) Is there an AVI-> DVD-compliant MPEG2 guide that "does it all at once" with TMPGenc or other freeware tools?

    Thanks.

Load your AVI in Virtualdub and go to FILE > Save WAV to get your audio to a wave file.

Is there an AVI-> DVD-compliant MPEG2 guide that "does it all at once" with TMPGenc or other freeware tools?

Not here, but I think that this site

    could have what you want.

Before saving as wav you should go to the audio menu and select "full processing mode". Otherwise the wav is just compressed audio with wav headers. This doesn't really apply if the avi audio is AC3 because there's no need to decompress.

Thank you both for your kind responses.

Took your advice and it worked just fine.

Trying to make a DVD-compliant MPEG2 though, and I thought I could do a simple mutliplex to merge the WAV and the MP2, but apparently not. I used the MPEG Tools in TMPGenc and it gives me the error:

"Illegal MPEG audiostream" when I choose the WAV file. Any ideas on this one? Do I have to re-encode the audio to be DVD-compliant as well?

P.S. It is an AC3-xVid file, if that makes a difference.

A "WAV" file is just a LPCM file with a header. Open your wave file in an audio editor that can save .PCM format, then save it that way.

You might want to experiment with converting your wave file to .AC3 using BeSweet. It works a lot of the time (but not all).

Or, obtain a commercial AC3 converter.

    Thanks. Will check out BeSweet.

Can you recommend any commercial AC3 converters?

  7. If I were you, I"d open the file in VirtualDubMOD, then select STREAMS> STREAM LIST> DEMUX, and save your AC3 file as is. Then use that to author. If you have a problem with low volume, install AC3 Filter. Configure as follows: enable auto gain control, enable normalize and raise master gain control a maximumof 20db. If this is not satisfactory, other possible configurations are detailed in the help file. You'd need to read the help file in any case. AC3 filter should become the default filter after installation, although you may need to specify the filter in your software player. A/V synch issues can also be corrected in settings, if that's a problem. I'd save my money and try this method first. Works for me. Good luck.

  9. Merc, if you have the elementary streams you should be good to go. Have you tried dvdauthorGUI? All you have to do now is author and burn.
