  1. I'm having an issue with explorer.exe shooting up to 100% cpu utilization and staying there whenever I left or right click .mpg files. It stays up whether or not I play the file, delete it or deselect it. If I cancel the explorer.exe task and restart it, it stops, but this is quite a nuisance to have to do dozens of times a day. Does anyone know whats causing this and how to fix it? It only happens with .mpg files.

explorer.exe is windows. when the performance goes up to 100% that means that all of your processor is being used by windows. what software are you using to play the mpg files? it seems like windows is trying to load that application but it cant. try redownloading that program.

  3. I usually use media player or realmagics player, though I don't think it matters. Just simply selecting the file by either left (or right) clicking it causes the spike in explorer, even before any player is started.

  4. Experiencing the same thing. Got both Win2003 and XP dual boot. Locks up explorer.exe in win2003 but same file plays in XP. Just right clicking causes this problem...

me too, running on 2000. i don't get what's happening with it, as explorer isn't actually DOING anything.

  6. After further investigation I found that it must be F-Prot RealTime Protector software causing this. If I disable this it runs fine.

The issue could be related to this problem. It could be that Explorer is attempting to read the specs and/or generate a thumbnail. The reg fix in the thread I linked might solve the problem. Just a thought.

Well might not be the same fault cause we have.

Have you tried to close all non essential running tasks before trying to open the file?

  12. My mpg's are recorded from DVB-S sat card. I doesn't happen with all recordings so difficult to say why it happens. It seems F-Prot is the cause in my case.
