  1. I've got a DVD that a friend gave me to check out. It's the second one he's got from HMV that's nackered - just won't play through properly on his laptop.

Is there any way I can find out exactly what's wrong with this thing? I have tried ripping with DVD Decryptor and it has a hell of a job, but that doesn't tell me too much apart from piss-poor production.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

What do you mean with your comments about ripping the disk?

My guess is that if the disk can be ripped by DVDDecrypter, then it's ok, at least in content.

It could be that if it's badly mastered the reflectivity can be marginal and the notebook DVD may reject it.

What exactly is the behaviour on the notebook?
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. SaSi,

    Thanks for your reply.

The notebook simply refuses to read the disc. Both my DVD drives ripped at between 0.1x and 0.6x - I assume this is problems with erroneous reading and therefore that part requires re-reading.

It's OK now - we had a row with the staff at HMV who claimed that the disc was fine - it's impossible that DVDs can be produced badly and we don't know what we're talking about. I made them try to play it in the store DVD player, which spat it out with "Bad or Unreadable Disc". We got a replacement but no apology.

The replacement works just fine. It must have been a badly-made disc - I used to get quite a few when I worked on customer services at Sainsbury's. You'd think that at £20 for some DVDs, they could make them to a reasonable standard, or at least test them at the factory.

    Thanks again,

    Cobra

I purchased a 2 DVD set of Dario Argento movies (Tenebre and Deep Red, for those who know who Argento is) and one of them refused to play. It had a weird marking on the inner edge and was unreadable in every player or DVD drive I placed it in. It can happen sometimes, even on pressed discs I guess there is still a chance of errors or bad discs.
