  1. hey, first of all i appreciate all of the guides to the left, i've been doing video for about 2 years now and this site has been helpful countless times. i recently felt like getting involved in some of the discussions around here so i finally signed up.

i've got an osprey-100 capture card which captures beautiful 640x480 video. On Viewcast's site (the maker of the card) it says that all cards above the Osprey-50 should be able to cap at 720x480. When push comes to shove, it doesnt matter because I shoot in 16x9 and so it gets squeezed down anyway when I re-encode and burn on DVD, but I'm just curious if anyone knows how to get it to cap at a higher resolution. I've tried lots of software...Windows Media Maker doesn't, Nero doesn't, IU_VCR doesn't, WinVCR, WinDVR, and MainConcept Mpeg Encoder don't. Hell, Even VIDCAP won't. Maybe it's not possible. I've been capturing MPEG1 at 640x480 at 6000Kb/s with Mainconcept. It seems to work best. For some reason I can't capture at MPEG2 which is fine, it doesn't matter that much. If anyone can help me, please let me know. It's far from high priority, more just a curiousity.

This card is a frame grabber device which more suitable for video streaming purposes and overlaying text on video feed. Are you using this for the Church or for Corporate presentation? This card is great to be used with EAZYWORSHIP for church presentation.

This card is based on BT848. Try the driver from this site http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ and see if you can capture higher than 640x480 and mpeg2. The specs for this card say that it supports 720x480 at30 (566 at 25) so it is just the matter of time for windows based capturing software to support mpeg2 for this card properly. Mpeg2 encoding is done by software for this kind of card.

Or if you want to try Linux, this card is supported by V4L (Video for Linux) and Videolan.

  3. yeah, im very aware about the software encoding. i use it to edit together my shot on Hi8 short films (and my eventual full length over the summer.)

I love the card, as it has better results than my friends ATI TV Wonder and my movies don't look bad at all when I render them to D1 or sometimes 1/2D1 mpeg2 for use on DVD. For what I paid for it, and for what I've done with it it's a great card. I love it. However, once I make money in the summer from working a decent amount of hours, I'll look into the Canopus ADV-100 or whatever it's called.

I've got those drivers already, and mpeg2 captures but it drops frames like a bastard. However, a 640x480 29.97 fps capture at a pretty high bit rate captures beautifully...i've done two hours (a whole Hi8 tape) but I'm sure if I needed to I could get another hour, hour and a half worth of capture in a single session. The a/v never go out of sync and I seldom drop frames even with the crappiest of sources.

Thank you for your response. I'm extremely appreciative.

If you use the btwincap drivers and you drop frames, try another colourspace! YUV2 is not always the best choice.
At first, test with virtualvcr and also try your luck with virtualdub or one of the mods (I use virtualdub mpeg 2 for example).

  5. virtual vcr hated my system. i couldnt even get it to recognize the card, and i found its results to be sub-par on a friend's system. i bought mainconcept and haven't looked back. i capture my hi8 direct to mpeg1, no noise, no lag, no nothing. i sing praises about the program.

it's funny, i used to use this VCR program...WinVCR. It captured perfect mpeg2 video at 640x480, but when I upgraded to XP it didn't like it. I ended up formatting, reinstalling everything, and it still didn't like it. I'm content with

virtualdub works for AVI capture, i just forgot to list it. sorry about that.

If it works with mainconcept and not virtualvcr, it means only one thing...
    You PC is messed up!
So, good luck on cooking something that works for you!
If you wish all the issues solved, then you have only one alternative: "Format C:" . But this is not an option always for most users.

PS: VirtualVCR need wdm drivers, Virtualdub vfm. It seems that you have installed vfm drivers only, so it is natural that you might have issues with wdm (if you don't set up a warper).
Did you try install btwincap drivers and virtualvcr? Or you just tried virtualvcr?

Hi-8 is only 720x480 (NTSC) even when shot in 16x9 mode. All it is doing is masking off part of the picture. Capture at 720x480 and then use TMPGEnc or Main Concept encoder to crop down to the correct resolution. Don't ask me how, because I don't know what needs to be done, just that both of those encoders can do it.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?
