Well it didn't die completely. It still reads everything it use to, and writes to my CDRW disc as before. But, It won't write to the same CDR, DVD-R, and, DVD-RW discs it use to. Nothing but errors.... It won't even erase the same DVD-RW discs that have worked fine for months.
    Sucks....
I took a break from writing discs for a while and just now began to clean off my drives....but the thing won't burn anymore. I tried everything, different systems, different burning programs, even took the thing apart and cleaned the laser.
    Sucks....
The thing was manufactured in Jan '03, installed in a new FW800 PM in Feb '03, and of course, has a one year warranty. My only guess would be it's defective, or maybe the heat got to it? The Dual FW800 with 4 internal HDs and two Optical drives does get hot....

So I need a new Burner. I'm getting ready to order a DVR107 unless someone has a better suggestion 8)

What did you clean it with? soap and water?
the 107 is an excellent drive. 103$

    Pioneer DVR-107 ELPIO107 102.75 from esbuy.com

the price keeps going down each week. Maybe if you wait a little longer it will be 99.99$

i read a bunch of reports from xlr8yourmac.com that some people are not getting finder support from them, not sure why, because i ordered one from here last week it came in a few days ago and it works like a champ! I dont have any 8x disks yet, but it has no problems with any of my 4x media

yeah, I felt like tossing the thing in the dishwasher.......
The only thing I can think of is that I've been using a lot of -RW discs. Which brings up the question of why Toast 5.x or 6.0x insists on using 50% processor power to merely erase a Disc. Seems outrageous to use 50% of a Dual 1.25 to erase a Disc. Maybe......

Anyway, I just ordered one of these. Bad news is this is the same place I obtained the 105. Good news is the 107 is less than half the price that I paid for the 105
I can't wait any longer, my hard-drives are getting congested, I need to burn

Thanks for the link, but the question about Finder support concerned me. The one I ordered is listed as PIODVR107 and guaranteed. I've also done business with that company for a very long time and only had trouble with IBM 2.5 inch HDs (not their fault) and the 105 (still scratching my head). It's not that much more

I also ordered a 2.5 inch FW/USB HD enclosure at the same time. That will help cut down on the CD/DVD-RW erases for me 8)

    WTF?????
OK, I finally got the drive today. Seems the optional power supply I ordered with the 2.5" HD case was out of stock and caused a delay. No biggie, in fact, the price came down in the meantime and I got the 107 for $116. It's also the black one, nice....

So, I remove the mounting box, remove the old CD/DVD-ROM (came from a Sawtooth G4, the Sawtooth now has the original Toshiba) from the lower bay, install the 105 in the lower bay and the 107 in the upper bay, both set to cable select (just like before). Fire it up, everything looks great. The 107 is seen and supported, Firmware is 1.10, I don't have a PC and the FW800 won't boot 9, so, 1.10 it is.

I decide to try the 105 again. WTF! NOW IT WORKS? WTF? I had removed the thing and cleaned it earlier, even tried setting things as Master/Slave, and it still gave errors. NOW IT WORKS? great....

So now I have two burners......
    in the same machine......

Whenever my stereo system components fail they fix themselves during the car ride to the repair shop. It's the miracle of technology.
