OK - this is it - all I can say is I've been trying for sometime to get an SVCD working with pause/ff/rew on a philips dvd 750, and have failed until now. I even tried the New nero SVCD plugin - but that would not work for me.
First, the player:
Philips DVD 750. I have upgraded to latest firmware - 7.22 -but I don't think that is essential, because it did not fix the problems until the sequence described below.
Second, the video file creation (not free software, but I think *any* video capture format should be ok.
I use an ATI All In Wonder 128 Pro. I capture in the highest resolution which gives no dropped frames, AND smooth video. (With this card it is possible to capture without dropped frames, but still get jerky video). On a Duron 600 (clocked to 750) I can capture at 352x576. I capture to MPEG1 - yes I know I shouldn't use mpeg for later encoding, but it is the only format I can capture to at reasonable resolution, and file size.
I have tried creating svcd from this raw file, or after processing (titling etc) through ulead video studio - both work. With video studio, I output at the same res as the input video, but up the bitrate to 8000kb/s
Finally I encode the video using tmpgenc version 2.00, using the SVCD template
Then using the latest "vcd imager easy" I burn this directly to CD (I downloaded the version including vcd imager, and cdrdao. It is necessary to check the 'update scan data offsets' in the advanced page - this is advised when vcd imager scans the file.
That is it - the cd then works in my philips with pause/ff/rew.
Note I have NOT tested a video longer than 40 minutes - I suspect from what I have read that ff/rew will not work if I do.
I've taken a lot from this site - I hope this helps to repay some of it
Cheers

I had the same problem with the FF/RW buttons on my Apex 600 and now I have a remedy. I own the Ulead Media Studio pro 6 software with the DVD upgrade. With this software I burned my SVCD's with no more FF and rewind problems. In addition the plugin creates menus and chapter points. I was able to add chapter points to VCD's as well, my long search has ended.

I have philips 711(firmware 7.12).
If you burn xsvcd > 40 mins you will get strange problems after 40 mins.
You can however break it in chapters or tracks with each tyrack/chapter < 40 min -
You may also want to try de-muxing and re-muxing with bbMPEG. This worked far better for me than the "update scan offsets" option in VCDImager. Using that option created an SVCD that would play fine from start to finish but was terribly out of synch when chapter entry points or ff/rw were used.

Good luck with > 40 mins. No-one else on this forum seems to have made it work on a Philips. (see other posts)
I disagree with encoding from MPEG1. I definitely seem to get a better result encoding from avi (or it is my imagination) Avi files were created from firewire capture from DV.
I tend to disagree with using bbMPEG to update scan offsets (although may be very appropriate for some other players). VCDImagerEasy does it well so why put another step in the process. Sometimes I may lose audio when stopping ff/fr but pressing pause then play gets it going again.
I have also tried separate tracks with each track < 40 min but this did not work.
Good luck.
