Last night I turned on my laptop and after loading it came up with a system error in lsass.exe and it rebooted. I continued to reboot and this problem continued. Only now do I realize that I had the "Sasser virus" and it affected my lsass.exe. I didn't hear about this new virus so I wasn't prepared. Anyways, I went into Safe mode command prompt and renamed my lsass.exe thinking that would fix the problem but it didn't and now my laptop won't start win xp at all. And I can't get back to rename the file.

Can anyone please help me out?

    Thanks

I can't find my original Dell XP CD (I just moved) and I never had an original one...is there any other way. If I go out and buy a Win XP CD will the allow me to run a repair on mine?

  4. Do as stiltman says first, but download the Sasser patch and removal tool:

    Patch
    Remover

Burn them to a CD using a clean, patched PC. Once Windows is repaired, don't connect your PC to the Internet until you have applied the patch and removed Sasser from your PC.

    Good luck!

EDIT - Sorry, you were typing as I was. You could phone Dell and ask them what they can do - they may be able to sort something out. Otherwise, a fresh copy of XP, although expensive to buy, should sort it out no bother. You also have the advantage that you can transfer this copy of XP to another machine, so if you decide to build your next PC yourself that's one less expense.

Sorry I can't be more help with this. Talk to Dell, and see what they say.

Do a search for Hiren's Boot CD or use Bart's PE
    Then rename it back

I suggest cobra's post. Download the removal tools. I used the one from symantec.

You shouldn't need to reinstall xp though...or at least I didn't.

  8. I have recently had to install ZoneAlarm on my PC to keep out the viruses going around the uni network. They all use Sophos which can't seem to spot LoveGat.x meaning I get infected every few minutes...

ZoneAlarm set to "Stealth Mode" on both Trusted and Internet zones has protected me against all threats - nothing gets through without your explicit permission.

As RabidDog says, it's A Good Thing.

  11. No problem - I just linked to the relevant patches/fixes and a firewall, that's all. Stiltman is the one who sorted out the actual problem.

And once again, I would suggest doing what he says in the above post. It saves buggeration if something happens again!
