I hope i am not breaking any forum rules with this question

can some please explain what a torrent is

I have been searching various sites in the last week to find information on AVi MPEG's and have come across something called Torrents which apears to be films which seem to be on some form of P2P network it is alleged that these can be burnt on to VCD'S and DVD's

Bit Torrent is a p2p client. Torrents are the small files that connect you to other people downloading and/or sharing the same file the torrent specifies. If you're looking for torrents this isn't the place to ask, though I realize you didn't ask.

torrent movies are notorious for beeing illegal copies distributed via well the torrent.

These fall into the topic of Warez

Warez includes downloaded copyrighted movies, movies that are not yet released on VHS/DVD and copying rented movies.

Many Thanks Teegee420 for your reply

So if i have this right you must need to give some form of IP address and then allow other access to your hard-drive. In which case does this mean that the Torrent is in fact a form of spy ware and can you protect your computer against hackers or do you in fact become a target.

That is presuming that i have of course understood correctly what you are saying (uh)

    no not at all

torrents are an individual file that contain "tracker" information. The tracker is the "server" that is allowing the p2p transfer.

the file is located on one parties hardware, and they have to be "seeding" [uploading/sharing] it.

the .torrent is a "linker" to thier file such that any other person can have access via the p2p app.

    that should be enough

again... any downloaded movies copyrighted movies are Warez on this forum and topic of them is not permitted.... hope you are taking this hint the right way ...

I was wondering about this myself. I have a torrent file that is supposed to be of The Punisher, which was recently released. I was going to burn it to DVD. My question is, since it is only a few K in size, how is the quality? (EXPERTS ONLY, PLEASE!)

Yes I do get the point and will not ask again. The reason for the questions were that I was unable to get my head around the process and because you need to pay a fee to join theses forums, plus it's clear from your explanation I had totally misunderstood teegee420 interpretation

well Supreme2k since the original punisher movie sucked ass the quality isnt really gonna matter. but if you insisit, the best way to get a great quality movie via p2p use the special search option(alt+f4). most all of the p2p are loaded with that special search option by the way.

    let me add that Torrent IS NOT THE SAME as warez;

There are some sites that uses Torrent files to share legal music - sharingthegroove is one of them

  14. Torrents are the the same as warez. I have a group of guys that trade files using bittorrent of local martial arts tournaments, and 'classic fights.' These are often old 8mm or VHS camcorder films. It's a lot easier than mailing VHS tapes back and forth.

Clearly some (maybe even most) use it for warez (people in this tread admitted as much) but there are a lot of legit uses for P2P.

Torrents can be warez; They don't have to be though.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  17. The legality of sharing TV shows recorded off FTA television is something I have not seen discussed much. One could argue that since recording TV shows on a VCR or whatever is legal (witness the Sony Betamax case) then sharing that tape with a friend is also fine. Using file sharing is just another way of doing that

Bittorrents is a way to do that sharing and as somebody else noted, the client and servers don't know what you're sharing, whether legal. Just as a gun doesn't know if it's shooting a target or a person

People tell me that some of the torrents servers out there are some of the fastest ways to get access to shows aired on US television for those who can't receive them. Of course it does rely on somebody recording the show, converting to (usually) MPEG4 format and then enabling the sharing from their HD's by creating the torrents file and uploading the link to a server

I''ll explain some of the factory of wrong that you've just opened up (especially concerning legality vs. morality, discussed here recently):

So, where did you meet these 8 million or so "friends?

Why do people have to bring up gun analogies? How about "the pipe doesn't know what you're smoking" analogy once in a while?

Therein lies the legal questionability. If someone records something from HBO, or MTV-Brazil, somme other random P2P user is not allowed to view it. It is called time-shifting, and can only be done by the designated, authorized viewer.

Basically on the two points above, you are allowed to format shift your music and (I think) videos (audio to MP3, video to avi/mpg). You are allowed to loan a friend the original CD/DVD. You are not allowed to copy any copyrighted material and give it to your friends, whether next door or imaginary on the web/P2P. Random people downloading stuff from your computer does not constitute friends.

I just one could argue - I didn't say I believed in it or not

Analogies are way of expressing a situation in a form that perhaps clarifies the situation. If the pipe analogy does it for you then fine.

Now that seems a bit of a stretch. I never read the Supreme Court decision on the Betamax case but I seriously doubt if anybody has been prosecuted for recording a show off TV and sharing that with a friend. Remember the show was aired free to air (and I did make the point free to air) so anybody who can receive it is able to keep it. Now if somebody recorded something that was free to air and tried to sell it, that undoubtedly would be illegal

Cable networks where you pay for the programming are a bit murky since you are paying to watch so theoretically you have no right to share that. So I guess you argue that one can share say The West Wing since it's on free to air, but not The Sopranos since it's on pay TV

These are pure philosophical arguments and I don't want to apply too much intellectual thought to them since I have other things I would rather focus on

    You are wrong.

Regardless of whether you paid to receive viewing rights, you have no rights whatsoever to distribute the material, be it for profit or using P2P networks.[/b]

Briggsy is too funny. He meant well, he just cant see the sarcasm here.
A torrent is a massive deluge of activity ~ read dictionary.

Bit Torrents are not warez all the time. Thats like saying all cars are for hit and run accidents or all girls fart during their pooping session.

Bram Publically stated that the uses he sees for his program is not what he envisioned when he first wrote it and he does not agree with how it is being used for sharing copyrighted files.

I use bit torrent to share my home movies with the parents and my brothers. Its just easier for them to see the grandkids and nephews.
