    hello all,

i have recently put together a new computer. P4 2.8E Prescott, ABIT IC7-G, 1 gig Kingston Hyper X, Ti4600, Kingwin Aluminum Case.....and for the life of me I can not get this thing to run cool. Two 80mm fans in the front, one 80mm exhaust fan in the rear, Cooler Master FHS, and at idle with the side cover off I average around 50-52c---while i am encoding a DVD using Nero Recode it gets as high as 72c. Is this normal for a Prescott processor. I used Artic Silver 5 thermal solution and reinstalled the HSF twice to rule out a poor install. Any ideas??? Oh--I have not overclocked---yet.

    Yes.

I would suggest a copper thermalright cooler with a ~40 CFM 80mm fan.

  3. Is your 72c at idle or are you process some serious MPEG's for 2-3 hours before revewing temps?

Normally, at idle for my P4-2Ghz is 32c with peaks at 45 and thermal shutdown at 72c

Call Intel, as I did... they will give you idle, and max temps for your cpu.

The Prescott's earned the nickname "Presshotts" from a lot of the people who use them. They're utterly ridiculous to overclock. Get a Swiftech for it and put a Sunon high-speed on there with a variable rheostat on it and you should be OK. Thermalright is good too, I had those in my Tyan.

i run 4 scsi drives with hd fans and 3 ide drives on a p4 1.6 system using 3 80mm fans. mpeg work would run temps to 72c. then i removed the side cover and aimed a 10 inch house fan into it. now mpeg work raises temps to 33c. as a bonus, i never drop a frame anymore when capturing.

High temps are Prescott "feature". Only reason they actually work is that every unit has uniquely tuned thermal behavior, namely they rely heavily on thermal throttling. More about it in x-bit labs and anandtech.

If you really want P4, old Northwood is much better at same clock-rate than new Prescott. Get it while supplies last.

Prestonia and Gallatin are better cores but I can't recall which P4 chips run them.

Prestonia and Gallatin are Xeons, but can't remember, whether current, planned or ceased
