  2. News on Digitimes today would seem to contradict Philip's prediction

    http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Article.asp?datePublish=2004/04/28&pages=A7&seq=44

Figures published show that Dell and HP continue to save $10 per unit by not implementing dual writers.
Seems that DVD+R DL will be fitted to "top end" Dell's and HP/Compaq's in May.

Nearly 2 months on from the post above there currently still only appears to be the choice of a 8x DVD+RW/+R when customizing an HP/Compaq at hpshopping.com.

Of course the dual writer 420i/e is available as an extra.
Likewise Dell areoffering the 12x +R /8x -R Plextor PX712A as an add-on on their site

  4. I think the old 400i might be a rebadged BenQ/Hp. it has the 24x C-rw speed characteristic of the Philip's chipset. So a dual format upgrade could very well be possible.

The biggest growth area is after sales with people upgrading their PCs choosing dual-writers. Who goes out and buys a solo writer these days?

If Dell and HP had any influence over the market place, then we wouldn't now have the biggest selling writers being dual capable would we, as everyone would have followed Dell and HP leads and gone solo for +, but they haven't have they?

    Hi BIG Billy Goat!

    From your original link

"Heavily promoted by HP, Dell and IBM, DVD+RW burners continue to dominate the global OEM PC market, with a share of 60%-70% in 2003, according to various market surveys quoted by Taiwanese makers."

The following are not my words but those taken from a Consumer Electronics Daily article 24 Nov 2003:-

" More to the point, 80% of DVD burners are sold as build-ins with PCs, and with DVD+RW stalwarts Dell and Hewlett-Packard the 800-lb. gorillas in PC sales, 2/3 of all PCs shipped with DVD drives have dedicated DVD+RW burners aboard - that's +RW exclusively, not dual-format burners."

I could find other links (if I had the time) such as the one that said Hp were expecting to sell at least half of their desktops with DVD Writers (thats about 15 million) this year.

    http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=pr2004_01_13_185937

So we assume that Dell maybe doing the same -in total about 30 million drives worldwide.

"If Dell and HP had any influence over the market place"-only over 50% of the US market!

Any fool wanting a retail burner will buy a dual format machine-he thinks he's losing out on something if he buys a DVD+R only drive-not sure of what though?
    cheaper discs?....... not any more
    bitsetting capability..........err no!
    higher recording speeds..........not recently

"There is no format war anymore KDH, you can let it go now"

Crap and you know it...........you'll continue to post DVD-RW /Pioneer "news",I'm sure ........... you can let "it"(the denial) go too!
