I wanted to see the interest in this from everyone...
Ive asked baldrick but have not heard a reply.
Perhaps if i give him some figures to work with it may happen sooner rather than later

personally, i think it would be great to get a Mac off the topic forum where any and all mac conversations are allowed.

so vote, and when the numbers are high ill see what happens

    thanks

    Hell even SE users

The quadra 950 was a great mac! I had a 650 and then got the 950!
see we could have this conversation ad nauseum in that forum

That'd be kind of fun. I could wax nostalgic about my collection of Apples that I'm (slowly) bringing back up to speed.

    exactly......
a collection huh? what you got...

i currently have [all in working condition]

    Mac SE
    Mac II
    Mac IIvx
    Quadra 650
    Preforma 6215
    PowerPC 7300/200

    thats my "vintage" apple collection

  6. Well let's see...

    Mac IIsi
    Mac IIci

    Performa 600CD
    Performa 6400/180

    1 Quadra 800
    2 Quadra 950s

Those are the ones I'm sure of. There's six more in storage but I haven't had a chance yet to see what they are...

The Performa 600CD and one of the Quadra 950s work fine. I'm slowly working through the rest to see what their condition and usability is. Most were procured through schools in Albuquerque so they should all work fine. But I don't have any OS discs for most of them.

I'd love a Mac Off-Topic forum. I'd like to get these machines reconstituted so I can hook 'em up and run 'em.

    Now my Apple II collection...

I think it's not such a great idea to have a whole forum section dedicated to off-topic Mac stuff here for several reasons:
    1) If there's no theme, then people won't go there, as there's no expectation that they can find answers to specific types of problems. Since warez and stuff are not allowed here, it would quickly become yet another Mac help forum, plus a bunch of pointless discussions no one cares about, like talking about what vintage Macs you have or have had. For this, I think it would quickly descend into irrelevance.
    2) We're at dvdrhelp.com, a site dedicated to solving video-related questions.
    3) Many of the knowledgeable people who frequent the Mac Video forum wouldn't bother reading the other section, so many of the questions people would pose there would go unanswered.

I think it would be better to maybe make this an A/V forum, covering audio-related issues as well, and also to allow general off-topic posts right here (as long as they're not too stupid), so at least they might get some more attention. The most useless thing in the World would be to have a forum dedicated to people talking about mundane useless stuff, like waxing philosophical about their old Macs, and the good ol' days of yore. For general Mac help, there are already forums dedicated to answering most basic questions, and I personally don't see the need to have yet another, especially when most questions can probably be solved by going to other, more appropriate forums and performing a search (or just asking the mighty Google).

[Edit] Actually, when I think about it, the other Mac help forums are pretty weak, and poorly-designed. While a general Mac Help forum might be pretty good here, I think there would be a problem of advertising. The people that would need it the most wouldn't think of coming here for general Mac help. I found this forum as I knew the vcdhelp.com was a great resource for all things video-related, but if I was looking for general Mac help, this is about the last site I'd try looking. I think it might be easier to just allow more off-topic posts in this forum for the few that do think of coming here, or to try to find another good forum with this kind of organization and readership, and encourage people to go there. Can anyone suggest forums that would fit this description that are already out there? Preferably, it would be a phpBB message board, at a good site, with knowledgeable people there answering questions. [/Edit]

I guess I'm kind of neutral. I have a G4, but I use the PC most of the time, at least for surfing. I like the MAC, but good software is expensive and freeware is hard to locate. (Yes,I have most of the standard links) I suppose any additional resources would be good for the platform. If nothing else have a good place to show MAC video links would be helpful.

  9. An Off-Topic Area could be nice 8)

    BTW, this is my collection:

    Plus
    SE
    SI
    Classic B/W
    LC
    Performa 630CD(2)
Powerbook Bronze 400MHz DVD (not sure if it was lombard or wall street)
    iMac Rev A
    iBook 2000 (2)
    iMac DV SE 400MHz (1999)
    iMac G4 800MHz

Not all of them are working, tho

This thread is a good example of why a Mac Off Topic forum is a good idea. People like talking about random stuff with the community they're comfortable in. If, for example, you like asking galactica about how to make an SVCD, you might think he's just swell enough to ask about that old color PowerBook your dad had in the basement collecting dust but never told you about before Thanksgiving... Off topic? Yes ... Is this a good place to find galactica looking? Yes!

Sure, i can see that........ but how does that explain forums like
    1. Computer
    2. Off The Topic
    3. Polls

I just though with the rather large and thriving Mac population here a mac off the topic forum would fair quite well here as opposed to the others.

again this is great, this is exactly the info i want to get

So those forums must be removed ...I wasn't aware that those forums existed at videohelp... I thought this was a _video_ forum.

I prefer newsgroups and www-forums dedicated to specific topics. But I would certainly occasionally glance Mac OT forum here, if such existed.

    sure!
seems somehow that the topics are often inter-related anyway.
Such as issues about burners, mhz speed, etc,
as well as " Can I run {name that software} on
    my G3 iMac...."

Plus, it would give me one more place to hang out!

    exactly..........
plus some of the latest topics like

    Multitasking while processing
    iTunes playlist to iDVD
    Need with help iChat

could be discussed furhter.... since sometimes we get general mac questions in a mac video forum.

  17. I'm not fussy about whether it's a completely separate forum, a sub-forum (if such is possible), or just an understanding that Mac-related OT threads are allowed. I'm for it, whatever. While I've found other Mac/Apple forums and resources on the net, I really like the community here, and have confidence in what the people here post (unlike some places).

It IS much more than a video form, though. And that's what makes this place such a neat place!

Saturday, I ran into a question I couldn't answer after some research and KNEW that if I posted it here in Off-Topic, it would get answered. And it did, in a matter of a couple of hours.

Not only did it get answered, I got an excellent link that will provide me with tons of information in the future.

Once you've got enough video knowledge to be dangerous, a lot of people find other reasons to stay here. My video knowledge is in pretty good shape, but if they open a Mac Off-Topic forum, well, I've got those Macs I'm working on that will need things. And I know this will be a good place to say, "Hey, I have this Mac Quadra 950 I need to load an OS on. Where is the best place to get an older OS that this Quadra will run?"

    Just an opinion...

yea wierd huh, and whats even stranger is that the 70% value is right

but it should be 26% [25.9%] but i guess there is no rounding up
either way, ill make sure its correct when i approach baldrick with figures.

but with low numbers like this... it may not happen

I was going to put that in there... but I knew it would screw the results. Funny how people here require a tgpo option

QT, iMovie and iDVD are all video-related, and so they're very much on topic here. Ask away... in a new thread.
