problem with mainconcept mpeg encoder

almost everytime i convert avi to mpg with mcme. my computer freezes about 95%. please help

This sounds more like a hardware/OS problem, and not Mainconcept.
XP on a Celery 400 is not what I'd call a video editing machine, however.
What else is running in the background?
Have you done a thorough anti-virus/trojan scan?
Do you have enough room on the destination drive?
What is the source video?
What is your output ((S)VCD/DVD)?
We definitely need more information.

the source is avi to vcd mpeg
i am running and amd xp 3200 and i have a 40 gig hard drive. but it only has like 5 gigs left from movies
i am running windows xp pro
i just don't know what is up

reboot has the right ideas. Check with Task Manager for background processes running. Encoding is heavily CPU/memory intensive, bad memory modules are always suspect. Substitute if possible. You definately need more HD space, but unless your are running out of HD space during the encode, that may not be the problem. Try another encoder, TMPGEnc for example, and if the problem is still the same, you know it's not MainConcept. Unfortunatelly, there is no simple troubleshooting method to pin down a problem like this, you just have to elimate possibilities one at a time.

OK, you need to update your profile
With a machine like that (mine is similar), you don't have a mainconcept problem, it's something else.
First, I would go to www.blackviper.com and use the xp services guide there to turn off the junk you don't need.
Second, I would disable all anti-virus programs, as well as all firewalls, and disconnect from the internet while encoding.
Third, run msconfig, untick everything you KNOW you don't need running.
Fourth, uninstall such hidden resource users, such as Real player, Quicktime, Nero Smart start/InCD...
Fifth, run a full disk scan and defrag.

Once those few things are done, try another encode.
If it still fails, I would then begin to suspect hardware.
Is there enough room on the drive?
Is the CPU overheating?
Is the RAM really working properly?

Take the case off and clean out all fans with compressed air.
Turn off system restore, set a static swap file (page file) to conserve space.
