  1. Ok I have made two back up of dvds. Most of the time when I try to reencode it, so it fits on a single DVDr, my computer freeze up at random spots. I have tried DVD X Copy, DVD2one, and DVD Shrink. This is a 1.8ghz system with 512 of DDR ram. This should be enough. Any ideas why?

Background programs running, HD that needs defragging, corrupt encoding programs, bad memory modules, power supply failing. Just a few possibilities. One way to check is to run a different program that taxes the CPU/Memory/HD as much as Shrink, such as one of the encoders like TMPGEnc. Check your task manager while the program is running, it will give you some idea of the processor/memory load. Makes a difference if this is something new or has always happened. Troubleshooting this kind of problem is not always easy.

  3. I have tried it with nothing running background. I just defragment. Right now I think it might be the CPU overheating.

That sounds most likely. Find a copy of CPUBURN. It's a program that stresses the CPU -- even more than rendering. If CPUBURN doesn't crash your computer after a few hours, overheating isn't the problem.

  5. Well I try CPU burn with windows, it lasted all of 5 secs. I went to try it with my linux install, same machine, and it last all night. So I tihnk it has to be software. It also freeze up during games and such, but only after long time of palying them.

Still sounds like CPU overheating to me. CPUBURN is designed especially to make the CPU run as hot as possible -- more than any game or video conversion.

If you're not conviced because of the program running overnight under linux, try browsing the internet while CPUBURN is running. I've seen CPUBURN run for quite a while without a problem, then when you start doing something else at the same time -- crash!
