I figured I could use my Pioneer DVR-103 to back up some large files on a DVD-RW. I used Nero to burn about 1.7 GB as an ISO DVD-ROM, and deleted them from my HD.
My problem appeared when I wanted to use them. I popped in the RW, opened it up, and dragged the folder I had created on the dvd to a suitable HD folder. Windows ME says "471 minutes remaining," and it's not kidding! I left it running, came home 6 hours later, and it's still copying.
I looked all over for driver updates, but no luck. I tried Nero 6 (a recent purchase, updated online to the latest), figuring it can write the files to DVD-RW at 1X so it should know how to read them even faster. Too bad, Nero appears to have no functionality for copying files from ISO DVD-ROM, only burning them or copying them in image mode to another DVD.
I've noticed a similar problem with VCD's. When I want to recover a video file from a VCD, windows fails, and even using vcdgear it takes 15 minutes to copy one 394 MB file.
Is there anything I can do, to restore files stored on ISO DVD-RW's at a reasonable rate? At this point, I'm getting less than 0.1x.

Looks to me like a problem with your DVD Rom drive -
You could have given us more info, like 'Did it work faster before', 'Which Operating System are you using', 'Which motherboard are you using' - stuff like that.
My suggestion? Check that DMA is enabled for your DVD drive. -
looks like your dvd burner is about to fail. Buy a dvd-rom reader, they are cheap nowadays.

It has always been this way, at least on Windows ME. I'm stuck with ME for the foreseeable future, at least on this old video system. It's probably not the drive, it's the software vs. the ISO file system. Maybe I'm in the wrong forum? Please move me if so. I already have DMA enabled and sync transfer disabled for all drives. You can mouse over my profile to see all the gory old details.
Video CD slow file copy (e.g., dragging AVSEQ001.DAT to C: with WinME or converting same with vcdgear) from CD-Rs persists across drives both new (Sony 40x CD Writer records 800MB in 3 minutes, reads 400MB in 15 minutes) and old (Pioneer OEM DVR-103 nowhere near failing). I even tried dragging to HDs on the same and on different controllers.
Since my first post, I had better luck using isobuster to copy DVD-RW files. It might have done 1x. If anyone knows of a solution to a specific problem limiting read bandwidth for ISO CDs and DVDs, perhaps affecting WinME, I'd sure like to know about it. [/b]
