what is the minimum resolution of an avi file (coded divx or xvid) you should have to convert the file to svcd and still have good picture quality?

Hmmm. I'm not sure it matters as long as the source looks good and has a decent enough bitrate(900+kbps). Personally, I don't think I've ever converted an avi to SVCD that didn't have a horizontal resolution of at least 352 pixels. If you're not sure how things will turn out just run a short test clip.

Generally it's best not to encode resolution upwards, at least not too much. If it's closer to VCD than SVCD then I'll go to VCD, and vice versa. You may have to try it and decide for yourself.
