  1. I have a Sony DVD 300 camcorder. I use the rewritable discs. I use a Sony Vaio computer to copy the 1.4GB discs to standard 4.7GB DVD-R discs. If I use EasySystems "Dragn' Drop CD+DVD” software that came factory installed, the machine will make a “disk copy" of the original with no problem. What I would like to do is copy a 1.4GB disk to my laptop HDD, and then make a DVD-R using the burner on the Vaio. The computers are connected through a router and LAN cards. When I try this, the DVD is not playable in home DVD player but all the data is there. I can play the .VOB file in WMP by File, Open… The other files that are on the disc with the .VOB are .IFO and BUP. I should not need to do any file conversions, should I? These are homemade, no copyright movies. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    John

All the files you copied are from the video_ts directory on the original disk, yes ? When you burn them to the DVD-R, you need to make sure you are creating a DVD-Video disk, and simply copy them to the video_ts directory on the target disk (assuming your burning software on the vaio set this up for you, otherwise create it, and an empty audio_ts). Some pre-installed burning software is crippled to do simple data burns and disk copies, so you may not be able to create a DVD-Video disk with it.

The other option would by to make an ISO of the original disk, and burn that instead.

  3. Thanks for the reply.
The IFO, BUP, and VOB are in a folder called DVD_RTAV. This is the way the the disc comes out of the camera after finalizing. BTW, I have been shooting in VR mode lately as opposed to Video mode because of editing capabilities.

I gather from your post that the creation of a data DVD is not the same as a DVD video disk and that there is more to it than just folder names of where the files are located.

The Vaio is my brother's and I don't get over to his house but about once/week. I will take good notes the next time I am over there and get back to you if I am still can't figure a fix.

Additionally, the whole reason I want to do this is because I have only 3 "-RW's" and at full quality, each are good for 20 min. I have this laptop with all kinds of storage that I would like to use to store a lot of disks images, then go burn many archives at once.

I will also investigate the ISO idea you suggested.

    Thanks,
    John
