Pacific Digital 8x DVD writer @OfficeMax $70??

Hi all,
just picked up this at OM and have a question for anyone else that has this writer. It is packed as a Pacific Digital 8X writer. it burns only DVD+R at 8 and DVD-R at 4x. DVDInfo Pro shows this drive as IDE1008. what the heck is that? who manufactured this drive? is there any other prog that will show more detail as to the manufacturer?. the original firmware was 0054. it is now flashed to 0258 at a site recommended by the the drive manufactuer (whoever that is). the site is www.drvupdate.com.
another poster earlier this week mentioned this drive was either a BenQ or NEC 2500a. I wonder where he got that info?

the 1008 is the model Number. That drive has a bunch of different companies names on it. The drvupdate website is to update your drives firmware. I have the same drive, but the name on mine is Emprex. I think there is another firmware update. You should check it out.

This is the Microadvantage 8x for $120 then $50 rebate. OM is flakey with rebates.

i got one of these and its the lite-on ldw-811s, which is awesome. someone else got an NEC 1300a, iirc. ymmv. open it, see what it is, and otherwise return it.

i've also had no problems with over 100 OM rebates.

Ok, you have to examine the firmware to see what this is. It is a rebadged something. The FM will let u know for sure. I had the same problem at fist when I got the Khypermnedia 8x dvd writer as it was one of 3 different writers. There were a few tell tale signs on mine, mostly if it was made in malyasia, but not 100% all the time was this true.

Look at the firmware and u will know fer sure man.
